Is there a place where your body is comfortable?
Is there a place that feels tension?
If you observe the feelings in your body, without judgment or criticism, tension begins to relax, and whatever experiences you're having, you're able to be a witness to them without getting pulled around and swept up into them.
This technique is a key to yoga; it is watching. Starting from the body and going inward toward more subtle aspects like the breath and thoughts.
Energy flows in and out through our breath, what we eat, and sunshine. It is what gives us life force. When we use it properly, we have abundant energy. When we are busy in our bodies and minds and fall into habits, then energy disperses and we can become exhausted.
In other words, through yoga, we learn about how to direct energy in a proper direction to optimize it. This starts with the first two branches of yoga, Yama (observances) & Niyama (abstentions). Practicing these prevents energy from scattering.
From here, yoga postures purify and open the body so that it is ready for the energy that comes through proper breathing. Breath control and expansion lead to clarity, and we become able to turn inward. Then concentration follows. And in this state, meditation can arise.
Yoga refreshes and recharges our bodies and minds. It is the science of stopping the functions of the mind.
