I swear I asked the kids to smile for the picture! 😁

Was a tough weekend of competition! Our team was small and inexperienced but I'm incredibly proud of how they performed against a high level of competition!

There were some nice performances and plenty of positives to take away. We managed to pick up some wins and finishes with a silver medal and two bronze medals as a final result πŸ₯ˆπŸ₯‰πŸ₯‰

Most importantly was an incredibly valuable learning experience for everyone, myself included

Well done to Ju-Jitsu Federation of Cambodia for organizing such an impressive event!

Shooting for the legs can be pretty scary, especially if you keep getting sprawled on!

Targeting your opponents feet as you shoot will make it much harder for them to sprawl and will put you in a much stronger position for you to finish your takedown.

Don't stop shooting, just change your focus/target when setting up your shot!

We had two promotions yesterday at our club!

Nathan got promoted to blue πŸ”΅ after putting in the work the past few months. A fast learner and great training partner. His goal when he joined the gym was to develop his leg lock game and it's been impressive to see how fast he's developed that aspect of his game in just a few months!

Karl got promoted to purple 🟣 Karl took his first steps in grappling at H/Art Academy 8 years ago and despite having to deal with some physical setbacks has always remained committed to learning and improving. Karl has incredible hand fighting and terrorizes people half his age (on the mats 😁)

Congratulations to both! It's a pleasure to have you at the gym!

If you want to develop a great guard you need to have the mentality that every moment you are carrying somebody's weight you're losing.

The best guard players in the world are masters at moving themselves or their opponents to redirect their weight and pressure away from them

Building a solid structure of frames to maintain space is the foundation of the guard. Once you have solid frames in place you can start connecting to your opponents limbs (arms, legs...) to establish control which will help move and keep their weight off of you.

If you are not applying weight and pressure from top position you are not taking full advantage of the position!

You don't need to rush to pass the guard, learn how to use top position to apply heavy pressure and take space away from the guard player instead. Think about pinning your opponent to the floor with your upper body while denying their ability to move around effectively

Once you cook your opponent with pressure the guard pass will be much easier
