Shoutout to all the participants and congratulations to the winners and medalists of the 8th HEM THON Age Groups Swimming & Finswimming Championship 2026.

Special congrats to the swimmers of MVSWIM Club. We see the work you put in at practice and we are proud to see you on the podium.

Thank you to the parents for being there: all the early mornings, the long days and the constant support. In many ways, half of every medal belongs to you.

We also thank the Khmer Swimming Federation and Kiry Hem for organizing this competition and giving our athletes the chance to compete.

Training at altitude: physiological rationale

Training at altitude creates conditions of hypobaric hypoxia, where the partial pressure of oxygen in inspired air is reduced.

Such conditions may lead to:

• increased hemoglobin concentration
• increased red blood cell mass
• improved oxygen transport capacity of the blood
• enhanced VO₂max
• improved aerobic performance

During the first days of the camp, I deliberately shifted the training focus toward a more aerobic workload to allow for gradual acclimatization and to minimize excessive physiological stress.

Prolonged volume work under moderate hypoxic conditions provides a stimulus for adaptive mechanisms related to oxygen transport and utilization.

After returning to sea level, this may present as:
- improved cardiovascular efficiency
- better tolerance of submaximal workloads
- more stable pacing during prolonged efforts

Altitude is not a short-term effect but a strategic tool for physiological adaptation when properly integrated into the training process.

Why we chose Kirirom for the first MVSWIM training camp in Cambodia

We hosted our camp at Kirirom National Park (about 650m above sea level) very intentionally.

Even at this moderate altitude, the body works a little differently: with slightly less available oxygen, athletes experience mild hypoxia.

• breathing becomes more efficient
• the cardiovascular system works harder
• the body learns to use oxygen more effectively
• aerobic endurance improves

Kirirom gives us the perfect balance:
high enough to create a meaningful training stimulus, yet safe and appropriate for young athletes.
