🐌🪸 Perfectly placed on the reef

This elegant spindle cowrie resting on a coral is a great example of how detailed reef life can be. With its long shape and patterned mantle, it blends beautifully into its surroundings while slowly moving across the coral at night in search of food. 🤿💙

🪶✨ Feathers of the reef

This close-up of a tube worm shows off the incredible detail of its delicate feather-like crown. These “feathers” are actually specialized tentacles used for both breathing and catching tiny food particles drifting through the water.

The best part? If disturbed, the whole crown disappears back into its tube in a split second. Nature’s own disappearing act. 🤿💙

⭐🍪 The reef’s chocolate chip cookie

This chocolate chip starfish gets its name from the dark cone-shaped bumps covering its body, making it look almost good enough to eat. 👀

Those “chips” are actually modified spines that help protect it from predators. Slow-moving but full of character, these sea stars are always a fun find on the reef. 🤿💙

🐙✨ Hiding in plain sight

Buried beneath the sand, only a closed eye and a few suckers give this octopus away. Masters of camouflage, octopuses can change both their color and texture to disappear almost completely into their surroundings.

A quiet little moment on the reef, blink and you might miss it. 🤿💙

⭐✨ Not your typical sea star

This chunky creature is a cushion star, a sea star that evolved from having long arms into this compact, puffed-up shape.

Slow-moving and surprisingly tough, cushion stars spend their time grazing across the reef on algae and organic material. Up close, their patterns and textures are even more incredible than you’d expect. 🤿💙

🪸✨ The reef’s brainy beauty

This is Lobophyllia coral, often recognized by its large fleshy lobes and maze-like patterns. During the day it looks calm and solid, but at night its feeding tentacles extend to catch tiny plankton drifting by in the current.

Have you ever seen this type of coral? 🤿💙

✨🌊 One of the reef’s living fireworks

This delicate-looking creature is a feather star, a close relative of sea stars that uses its many feathery arms to filter tiny food particles from the water.

When currents move through the reef, feather stars open their arms wide like underwater flowers, creating some of the most mesmerizing shapes you’ll find beneath the surface. 🤿💙

🔍👀 Any guesses what this is?

This mega close-up might look like something from another planet… but it’s actually part of a marine creature we see regularly on the reef. 🌊✨

Drop your guesses in the comments before swiping to the next photo! 🤿

Hint: You definitely don’t want to touch it 😅

🐌✨ Nature’s underwater armor

This beautiful murex snail carries one of the ocean’s most impressive shells, covered in spines and ridges that help protect it from predators.

Murex snails are slow-moving carnivores, using a specialized tongue called a radula to feed on other small marine animals. Some species were even once used to create the famous royal purple dye in ancient times. 👑🌊

Strange, detailed, and full of history, another incredible reef resident hiding beneath the surface. 🤿💙

🪸✨ Pocillopora: the reef’s little nursery

This is Pocillopora coral, a branching coral that plays a big role on the reef. Its compact structure creates the perfect shelter for tiny fish, crabs, and other small creatures, like a busy underwater apartment block.

Fast-growing and full of life, Pocillopora helps reefs recover and thrive, supporting an entire community within its branches. 🤿💙
