As we go on holiday, here's something to keep in mind. Let it be something we recite to ourselves:

As a Taekwondo student, I stand tall and strong,
Reciting with pride, virtues that belong.
Courtesy, a foundation of respect I sow,
Treating others with kindness, wherever I go.

Integrity, a pillar of character I uphold,
Being honest and true, stories untold.
Perseverance, a flame that never fades,
Through challenges and setbacks, my spirit never sways.

Self-control, a steady hand that guides,
Mastering emotions, where balance resides.
With indomitable spirit, I rise above,
Facing obstacles head-on, with unwavering love.

In our Dojang's unity, I find my place,
A community of warriors, standing with grace.

Gender bias and stereotypes in the martial arts industry are unfortunately still prevalent today, even though women have been practicing martial arts for centuries. As a female martial arts instructor, I have experienced firsthand how some men can be dismissive of my abilities and qualifications simply because of my gender.

This bias not only affects individual women in the martial arts community but also has a broader impact on the industry as a whole. When women are not taken seriously as instructors or practitioners, it creates a culture where their voices and experiences are marginalised, and their contributions are undervalued.

To address this issue, it's crucial to challenge gender stereotypes and promote inclusivity in the martial arts community. We need to recognise and appreciate the diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives that women bring to the table as martial artists and instructors.

One way to support female martial arts instructors is to actively seek out their classes and workshops, give them opportunities to demonstrate their skills and knowledge, and amplify their voices through social media and other platforms. My goal is to one day have an all female-lead Dojang from staff, to managers, to instructors.

We can also encourage young girls and women to pursue martial arts as a means of self-defense, empowerment, and physical fitness. By creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all, we can help to break down gender barriers and build a stronger, more diverse martial arts community.

Memebers of The Dojang have kicked off a Taekwondo program at Cheleta Primary school, Nairobi. Cheleta is a public school in Runda that serves almost 1000 students up to grade 8. The school was established 40 years ago to serve 200 students and has not been updated to serve its current population. 80% of the students at this school come to school with little or no food and they live in nearby slum neighborhoods of Githogoro, Huruma Village, and some walk as far as Ruaka town. Despite its location in Runda the school is very underfunded and low on basic resources. Our very own Dojang memeber volunteers to be on the school board, sourcing funding and helping with broader developments of the school.

To begin with, we have implemented a program for for 100 students of grade 6. The kids are very excited to have Taekwondo in the school and to be getting the opportunity to work with high level female National Taekwondo players. Us teachers have been volunteering but will evetually need to be able to cover our costs to roll out the program to the whole school and to eventually provide the kids uniforms, many of who don't have basic sports wear.

The Dojang competing for the first time as a team at Parklands Sports Club Junior Competition. So proud of everyones efforts and the support (every child of The Dojang had a family member there to support them) and everyone went home feeling happy with what they achieved. That's what martial arts is about! We also won quite a few medals. To the organisers and Coach Caro, Kamsamnida!
