Ruaraka Boxing and fitness club We take in and coach anyone who commits to walking through the door every day and giving their all.

Since starting the Ruaraka Boxing Club in April 2016, Head Coach John Gicharu has not collected a single shilling from any of the fighters who train here. The Club accepts any young athlete willing to put in the focus and work, no matter his or her background. This means that, although the club runs on bare-bones gym equipment for now, our ultimate goal is clear: to train the most motivated, most

talented, most diligent young Kenyans. After retiring from professional boxing in 2015, John Gicharu began to train young athletes. None of them were able to pay for daily coaching, but for Gicharu, that was hardly important. His goal was to raise up top fighters that would compete internationally, and that meant taking the risk of training these young athletes for free, accepting the most motivated, talented fighters—not just ones who can afford to pay fees. To support his non-profit activity, the Nairobi City Council granted Gicharu a community-owned space to use for training, plus an adjacent church that is occasionally converted into a boxing ring for matches. Every weekday after school ends, this empty room becomes a space of focus, release, and diligence.
