Today 12th August 2016 is International day of the youth .The Theme is :The Road to 2030: Eradicating Poverty and Achieving Sustainable Consumption .It focuses on the
leading role of young people in ensuring poverty eradication and achieving sustainable development through sustainable consumption and production.
Sustainable consumption entails the use of products and services that meet the basic needs of communities while safeguarding the needs of future generations. The development and promotion of individual choices and actions that increase the eco-efficiency of consumption of all and minimize waste and pollution is critical to achieving equitable socioeconomic development. As key drivers of change in the post-2015 era, the world’s 1.2 billion young people must be bolstered by robust national policies and innovative solutions to the challenges they faced. Today’s young people were the first generation that could end poverty, and the last that could act to avoid the worst effects of climate change all over the world.
Our governments should also seek to harness the innovative spirit of young people especially in Africa which has 200 million young people making it the 'world's largest youth reserve. Here most young people are unemployed or there is underemployment.Training, job creation and young entrepreneurship should be pursued.
On the sociopolitical arena especially here in Kenya and Africa at large, the young people are the true barometers of the political and even economic development. In that regard I urge my fellow youth to take their pride of place, start serving today and just stop waiting for tommorow. The challenge of Youth Unemployment in our continent Africa may appear daunting, yet Africa's vibrant youth represent an enormous opportunity, particularly now when populations in the much of the world are aging rapidly. Educating the youth will enable them make maximum use of the resources at hand, leading to a sustainable future and therefore meaning that the youth are the axle to realization of vision 2030 hence a call for immense investment in youth.
Wish all my fellow youth all over the world a fabulous International Youth day.
