Watch: - Daniel Komen setting the 5000m world record at the Memorial Van Damme meet in Brussels (22 AUG 1997). He achieved a time of 12:39.74, breaking Haile Gebrselassie’s previous record of 12:41.86. This was the first time the 5000m world record was broken under 12:40.

Gebrselassie would reclaim his throne just months later, clocking 12:39.36 to regain the record he had briefly lost. Fellow Ethiopian Kenenisa Bekele lowered the mark to 12:37.35 in 2004, a time that left competitors chasing shadows for 16 years. It wasn't until 2020 that Uganda's Joshua Cheptegei finally broke through the barrier, posting 12:35.36 to establish the current world record and end one of track and field's longest-standing marks.

Since then, Tokyo Marathon has been her stage with a victory in 2:16:28 in 2023, a second place but 2:16:14 PB in 2024, and a fifth-place finish in 2:19:57 earlier this year.
