FSH and LH are not enemies. They are your brain's way of sending instructions to your ovaries. When they start shouting, the real question is not "am I finished?" It's "why are they shouting?" Let's break it down. From the root.
1. FSH, the brain's messenger
FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone) is your brain telling the ovaries, "Tafadhali, andaa yai." If the ovaries are slow to respond, the brain shouts louder, FSH goes up, the same way you call someone twice when they don't pick up the first time. This can mean egg reserve is dropping, but one number alone doesn't write your story. Age, cycle day, and other hormones complete the picture.
2. LH, the one who gives the final order
LH (Luteinizing Hormone) comes in after FSH has prepared everything, and says "Sasa! Toa yai!" FSH sets the table, LH tells everyone to eat. Unusually high LH, especially paired with irregular cycles, can point to PCOS. Not a death sentence. A pattern to manage.
3. When both are high
If FSH and LH are both raised, especially with missed or irregular periods, it can mean the ovaries are struggling to respond to the brain's signals. This shows up in perimenopause, or in younger women as primary ovarian insufficiency. Note I said "insufficient," not "empty." The ovaries can still surprise you.
4. Timing matters
These hormones move with your cycle, LH especially spikes around ovulation. Testing on a random day and panicking about the number is like judging someone's mood from one WhatsApp text taken out of context. For fertility work, we usually look at FSH around cycle days 2-4, alongside other markers.
5. High doesn't mean "impossible"
Read this twice. A high result gives information, it doesn't give a verdict. Age, ovulation, tubal health and your partner's results all matter too. One number is not the whole file. Don't pack away the baby clothes. Get proper interpretation.
6. The bottom line
FSH and LH are messengers. When they're shouting, don't silence them, ask them why they're shouting. Root causes matter more than raising red flags.
