We are glad to report that on 4th and 5th of June, a team of 10 students from the Strathmore University Chess Club visited a number of schools in Kitui County for our Chess in Schools initiative. The initiative was led by the 3rd former captain Toni Sembei and will continue to grow under the 5th and current captain Mark Nyairo who has promised to make Chess in Schools a key part of our club's annual activities as the Kenya chess community endevours to grow and overcome the barries that have previously prevented the growth of our beloved game:
1. St. Charles Lwanga (35 students)
2. St. St. Ursula Girls (65 students)
3. St. Angela's Girls (63 students)
4. St. Thomas Aquinas Kalawa (60 students)
We trained more than 200 students how to play chess and made preliminary set up of the chess club, donating chess boards and chess study matrial to the schools. We would like to thank the Strathmore University Chess Club and Strathmore University Community Outreach Program for the support, Prox Chess House for philanthropically donating 16 chess boards to this initiative the Kitui Catholic Diocese for help us connect with the four schools, the schools for hosting and the 10 members of our club who turned up for this great initiative.
We would like to recognize the efforts by Prox Chess House under Titus Mwangi, Joseph Kirega (our teammate) and Titus Mwangi Mwaqus for their involvement in making this initiative come true through the donation of chess boards.
We would also like to appreciate Father Julius Muthamba of the Kitui Catholic Dioscese for his effort in connecting us to the various schools, we look forward to with our fellow catholic church establishment in the future. Special thanks to Mr. Kiwa of St. Charles Lwanga for kick starting this initiative when he invited us to his school for chess activation.
