One Question That Instantly Reveals Who Prepared for the Interview

Imagine I'm interviewing two candidates.

I ask both of them exactly the same question.

"Tell me about a time you solved a difficult problem."

Candidate One says,

"I've had many situations like that... let me think..."

Ten seconds pass.

They finally tell a story...

but it doesn't really answer the question.

Candidate Two pauses for two seconds.

Then smiles.

Then says,

"Yes. A situation comes to mind from my previous role..."

They tell a clear story.

Beginning.

Challenge.

Action.

Result.

Here's the interesting part.

Candidate Two isn't necessarily more experienced.

They simply prepared differently.

Most people prepare by memorizing answers.

The best candidates prepare by organizing their experiences.

Your career is full of evidence.

Projects you've completed.

Problems you've solved.

Customers you've helped.

Conflicts you've resolved.

Achievements you've earned.

Confidence Doesn't Win Interviews. Preparation Does.

Can I challenge something you've probably heard before?

People love saying,

"Just be confident."

But what if you don't feel confident?

Should you pretend?

Here's what I've discovered after coaching interview candidates.

Confidence isn't something you magically feel on interview day.

It's something you quietly build long before interview day.

Think about it.

A pilot doesn't become confident after takeoff.

A surgeon doesn't become confident after the operation begins.

An athlete doesn't become confident after the whistle blows.

Confidence comes from preparation.

Interviews are no different.

When you've practised your answers...

organized your examples...

and understood what the interviewer is really looking for...

confidence naturally follows.

Stop chasing confidence.

Start building competence.

Confidence will catch up.

The Biggest Interview Mistake Isn't What You Think It Is

I'd like to tell you something that surprises almost every person I coach.

Most people think they fail interviews because they gave the wrong answer.

In reality...

they usually fail because they answered the wrong question.

Let me explain.

When an interviewer asks,

"Tell me about yourself."

Most candidates think,

"They're asking me to tell them my life story."

So they begin talking about where they were born...

which primary school they attended...

their hobbies...

their family...

and everything except what the interviewer actually wants to know.

Or even worse,

They start reciting chronologically what is in their CV -- which the interviewers have already read.

Both approaches are a colossal mistake.

Here's why...

The interviewer is not asking for your biography.

And, they are certainly not asking for what's in your CV,
because they've already read it.

Here's what I want you to remember.

Every interview question has two questions.

The one you hear.

And the one the interviewer is silently asking.

The candidates who get hired answer the second one.

That's why interview preparation isn't about memorizing answers.

If it were, most people would be winning job interviews left, right and center.

It preparation is about learning how interviewers think.

Once you understand that...

every interview becomes much more predictable.
