❄️ Snow Globe Village ❄️

It literally snowed all day yesterday, not huge amounts but consistent and made everything very pretty. 12cm reported up top overnight lying over everything we got yesterday. Think we may have been hit with a little rain down low early this morning as can see the snow line hovering above the village. But is sure to be a great day up top. Snowing lightly in the village now.

When you’ve been wandering the streets of Nozawa Onsen, have you noticed the links to Austria?

Have you skied down the Schneider slope?

Have you had a coffee and steamed Nozawana pickle bun from St Anton on the main street?

Well, in the 1970s, Nozawa Onsen became a sister village with St Anton in Austria.

This is because St Anton is the hometown of Hannes Schneider. We have a plaza and hotel named after him in the Village.

Schneider spent many days exploring Nozawa’s slopes when skiing was just beginning here, helping to engage the community in this new foreign sport.

St Anton Village Nozawa
Since becoming sister villages, the two places take part in cultural exchanges, sending locals to both places learning about ski techniques, resort management and cultural life.

Have any of you skied at the resort in St Anton?

Tag us when you find any St Anton or Schneider connections!⛷🤔🏔

If you’re looking for something fun to do this weekend, take a trip to Iiyama for the local lantern festival. Have a look for more information🏮✨

❄️🌞 NOZAWA WINTER HAS ARRIVED 🌞❄️

~ If you're in Nozawa Onsen already, I recommend making the most of the glorious sunshine today and heading out for a walk.

~ Although most of yesterday's snow is melting away, the village is looking picturesque.

~ Water is trickling from rooftops.
The sun's heat is turning the white-sugar dusting of snow on the tree tops into snow glitter falling from the leafy branches.

⛷ You might be able to manage a ski or board down Hikage, which has a new nice layering of fresh snow. You'll have to hike to the top of the run though!

⛷ Yamabiko looks good on the live snow cams with the new snow up top mixing nicely with the man-made snow. The snow guns worked hard in yesterday's below-freezing temperatures.

🌞 It's a balmy 5 degrees right now, reaching a high of 7 degrees!

❄️ After yesterday's fresh snowfall, Shiga Kogen was lucky enough to open another ski field.
Kumanoyu opened this morning with 20cm of new snow.

⛷ Looking ahead, tomorrow's below-freezing temperatures should bring around 10cm of new snow, with another 10cm forecast for Tuesday.

🍃 Walking is the perfect way to explore Nozawa Onsen while the roads are still clear from snow. Wrap up warm, treat yourself to a coffee from one of the local cafes and get some pre-season exercise in.

The 1st of December and the first day of Winter in Japan

We are waking to a dusting of snow up top at Yamabiko and on the surrounding higher peaks. Checking the web cams and the resort has the snow guns blasting away up there too. With about 20cm expected in the next 24 hours I wonder if they are quietly hoping they may get open on Saturday.

It will be a stretch but you never know we may get more than forecast, it has happened before :) Looking ahead and temps will remain reasonably cold up top sitting below 0 degrees most days with snow marks here and there.

If planning a ski trip to Nozawa this coming season we still have some good availability across the board.

Getting your morning fix in Nozawa

Where is your favourite Coffee in Nozawa?
Cold Winter, Hot Coffee or if prefer Hot Chocolate. They kind of go hand in hand and nothing better to warm the soul than a hot brew on a snowy day. For years it was hard to get a good cuppa in Nozawa and I remember people begging us to get a decent coffee Machine. So we did, about 10 Years ago I am guessing, we put it at Nozawa Central and it was the first espresso machine in town.

As people’s love of coffee grew in Japan and around the world Nozawa followed and before long there were plenty of places to get a great cup of Coffee in the Village. Now I reckon there must be about 20 places in town that will serve a good morning pick up. I asked local, Luke from Lodge Nagano a bean counter from way back which are his favourites.

He likes Nappa Cafe, Mok, Shizenya, Tanuki, St Anton, Nozawa Central and Green peas for the Syphon coffee. There are of course many more and well worth checking them all out as Luke admits his favourites change from day to day and year to year. Lets us know your go to. The good news is the machine will be back at Nozawa Central this year so if dropping in for Rentals or to see the team at Nozawa Holidays be sure to grab a brew.

Check out lots of the great cafe options in town in our Guide; https://www.nozawaholidays.com/restaurants-bars/

Throwback Thursday to December of 2014

It is official the Resort will not be opening this weekend. No big surprises there, it is always a major bonus to see the lifts turn in November. It is a cold and rainy day here today again and cannot see the top but don’t think is snowing up there.

Good news is if you check the Forecast in the second shot, it looks like Winter is set to arrive proper right on time from December 1st with a nice cold system approaching. Bringing with it freezing temps and good snow falls. Things can change quick here in the mountains.

This photo is from December 15th 2014. We had almost nothing on December 5th and then it started. We got 2 meters of fresh snow in the 48 hours before this shot was taken. The base up at Yamabiko went from 0 to 210cm in 10 days.
It was a crazy start to the season, quietly hoping it will be a bit more gradual this year :)

Check out the archives of our past snow reports and that December to Remember here; https://www.nozawaholidays.com/2014/12/page/2/
Still great availability right up til the end of December so if keen to come up for some early turns shoot us a mail to [email protected] or jump on the site to instant book; https://www.nozawaholidays.com/availability/
Just select your dates and lodge.

Off for an Onsen. Have a great day.

Have you booked your Ski Trip for the coming season?

Nozawa Onsen has all sorts of accommodation options from traditional Ryokans and Minshikus to Ski Lodges and upmarket Houses and Apartments so there is something to suit most tastes and budgets. People often ask us about where is the best location to stay. Luckily Nozawa Onsen is a pretty compact little village so everything is close by, you definitely don’t need a car or really a shuttle bus where ever you stay. You can walk everywhere, get some exercise, do the environment a favour and not clog up the narrow snow covered streets.

This season things are getting back to normal but the overall feeling is probably wont be as busy as pre pandemic levels. There are still some good accommodation options for most dates. You can check out lots of great places to stay in Nozawa here; https://www.nozawaholidays.com/properties/

The lifts could start rolling in just 2 weeks from now in Nozawa on November 26th. The resort is using the new snow making guns and are confident will get open. The forecast is showing for a bit of a fall on Tuesday night for the top maybe up to 18cm but not a lot after that. Temperatures are remaining fairly cold for the top though so should be good for the snow making. No doubt before long we will have the usual problem of too much snow rather that not enough. Things can change very quick in the mountains. Stay Tuned for more and we look forward to welcoming you.

The Journey is inevitable. Baggage is optional

Have lots of people contacting us asking if can send their bags up to Nozawa when arrive. The Answer is yes! The Courier service mainly handled by a company known as Black Cat or “Kuro Neko” is next level. They will get your bag from A to B in Japan in no time and at a very reasonable cost with pure Japanese efficiency.

I once sent a bag from Tokyo at 7pm and it arrived in Nozawa at 9am the next morning. I would have struggled to get it there any quicker myself! It only cost 1500 yen too. All Airports in Japan have a “Takyubin” counter where the courier service is based and you can send to most accommodation places in Nozawa. All Nozawa Holidays properties are no problem and you can also send bags back to the airport or anywhere with us at Villa Nozawa, Lodge Nagano and Nozawa Central.

Here is a link to more details, it is all pretty easy; https://www.nozawaholidays.com/courier-your-bags/
If taking the shuttle then suggest just bring your bags up so you have them to ski the next day. If on the train then the courier service is a great help. You can then sail through Tokyo with ease and have a sleep on the train :)

The Nozawa Onsen Fire Festival
Who has seen it? Let us know what you thought it was like.
The Fire Festival is a spectacle which needs to be seen to be believed. It is held on January 15th every year to pray for a plentiful harvest, health and good fortune in the coming year. The festival dates back to 1863, and has a rich and colourful history in Nozawa Onsen.

During this festival the twenty-five and forty-two year old men from the village play a very important role. An old belief in Japan dictates that, for men, these years are unlucky ages. The men of the Village construct the shaden (shrine) from beech wood on teh festival grounds. it reaches a height of 18 meters.

Every year it takes 100 villagers to build the shrine. The trees are cut down in October and then brought down from the mountain, through the village, on January 13th. After the shaden has been constructed, the local priest performs a ceremony to endow it with a God. The days leading up to the festival are as amazing as the main event so a special time to be in the village. This year, hard to believe but we still have some accommodation available for around the Festival so email [email protected] if keen to come.

Check out more on the festival and a little video we made a few years back here, link also in bio ; https://www.nozawaholidays.com/news/nozawa-onsen-fire-festival/
After a few subdued years we hope to see it back in full roar this year and to see you there.
