Held around Sumiyoshi Shrine, the “Ome Grand Festival” is a traditional event with over 500 years of history.

Over two days, May 2 and 3, twelve beautifully decorated festival floats parade through Ome’s nostalgic streets, adorned with intricate carvings and lanterns. One of the highlights is “Hikkawase,” where floats come close together and compete with lively festival music, creating an intense and exciting atmosphere.

Visitors can also enjoy unique “Ibayshi” musical performances and view ornate float dolls dating back to the Edo and early Meiji periods, offering a glimpse into Japan’s rich cultural heritage.

With around 200,000 visitors each year, this vibrant spring festival is one of Ome’s most iconic events.

Held at Okunitama Shrine in Fuchu City, the “Kurayami Festival” is one of the largest traditional festivals in the Tama area, taking place over about a week from April 30 to May 6.

As its name suggests, the festival originated from mikoshi processions once carried out in complete darkness. Throughout the period, various highlights unfold, including the “Komakurabe” horse ritual, the “Mantou” lantern performance, and lively float parades.

The main highlight is on May 5. Led by massive taiko drums—some as large as 2 meters in diameter—mikoshi weighing up to one ton proceed through the night streets to the chants of “Oisa.” The powerful sight of these shrines moving through the darkness is truly breathtaking.

With around 800,000 visitors, this festival is a perfect destination during Golden Week.
