We practise a traditional Cantonese martial art called Sil Lum Hark Fu Mun (Shaolin Black Tiger style). It is a unique system containing internal and external fighting elements such as ten animals (Dragon, Snake, Tiger, Leopard, Crane, Elephant, Lion, Horse, Monkey, and M
arten), Iron wire (hard chi gong), and Drunken boxing. Background of Dr Shingo Miyauchi:
He is an experienced martial artist of 28 years. In his early teens, he started Shorinji Kempo. He continued learning a variety of martial arts in Japan such as Judo, Japanese archery (Kyudo), and Taekwondo. After he migrated to New Zealand at the age of 23, he took up a combination of Kungfu (Southern Praying Mantis) and South East Asian influenced combat art. Later, he learnt simplified Yang style Taichi (Chen Man Ching style). When moved to Australia, he began to learn the traditional Cantonese Boxing, Siu Lam Hark Fu Mun (Shaolin Black Tiger style) under Sifu Eric Tsai. Sifu Tsai later introduced Shingo to Chen style Taichi. Currently, Shingo practises Shaolin Black Tiger under Sifu Eric Tsai as well as Chen style Taichi under Sifu Guo Ping in order to refine the external and internal aspects of his arts. Dr Miyauchi is a research scientist in Molecular Biology working at the University of New South Wales. He has been teaching Shaolin Black Tiger and Southern Praying Mantis in the last several years. His approach to learning and teaching martial arts is to analyse the art scientifically and to instruct students clearly in simple language. Thus, students confidently develop self-defence skills and discipline as they are fully aware of the strategies and movements involved.
