I had heard that many famous martial artists and fighters had visited the Yoyogi doji in its hey day, including Benny the Jet, Monster Man Eddie, and even Bruce Lee. I put it all down to urban legend. Then I came across this newspaper article.

The legend himself Sensei Kokubo Juichi has traveled thousands of miles from his home in Peru and paid visit to the Higaonna Honbu Dojo in Naha-shi, Okinawa. Kokubo Sensei is regarded with the utmost respect by members of the TOGKF around the world. He was the longest serving true uchi deshi of Higaonna Sensei in the 1970’s as well as an active instructor at Yoyogi; in fact, he was already yudansha when many lifetime karateka first stepped foot into the dojo. As a result of his many decades of dedicated Goju-ryu training, Kokubo sensei not only demonstrates refined and fearsome technique, but he also emits a unique sense of joy and humility befitting of a true master.

Pleased to announce that Higaonna Morio Sensei has just been granted an incredible honor from the Emperor of Japan. Last week, representatives of Emperor Naruhito paid a visit to speak with Sensei and discuss the most prestigious recognition of Kyokujits Soukou Shou - the Order of the Rising Sun and Lights.

This honor is very rare and highly symbolic on a national and even a global scale. For many of us, it is only the most recent reminder of what we already know: how special it truly is to share in this lineage of traditional Goju ryu Karatedo through our practice and allegiance to the one and only Higaonna Dojo in Naha, Okinawa. Two prominent newspapers reported on this story - the Ryukyu Shimbun and the Okinawa Times.

Honbu Shihan in Singapore to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Singapore's indipendence. They were invited to Singapore by the Nippon Budokan, and asked to conduct workshops and take part in demonstrations.
