Snow Report
Monday, January 12, 2026
Back to reporting! The low snow this year had me pretty discouraged, to be honest (or, more accurately, having to tell people that it is just to bushy to go out in the hills just yet). It’s getting better, but there are still a lot of saplings out there. At least the sasa—grass bamboo—is pretty much covered up. It’s pretty stable, too, and will likely settle a lot with the sun coming out strong. Which means we can watch the partially-bent brush pop back out of the snow.
Lots of wind with the current snowfall, which is a lot of very little particles. It’s dense stuff, and is now sitting on a really wet base just below, thanks to the heavy rains that preceded yesterday’s snowfall. The wind patterns were really unusual yesterday, too, with strong winds coming from the northwest from the north of the Korean peninsula, and a strong wind straight from Vladivostok—the thing I look for to bring us heavy snows (and happy days, etc.). The snow started up mid-day, as the northern winds took over, although the west winds caused some lift closures earlier in the day.
