For over 30 years we have been organizing events and activities that bring children and adults into the countryside of Japan. These include our Family Bicycle Adventures; our Family Ski/Board trips to Shiga Kogen; our Win

ter Camps for children and parents; Nanbo Discovery Camp, our residential summer program for elementary and middle school children and much more. Let us help you explore the culture and the countryside of Japan through our educational and physical activities, our excursions and our travel opportunities around this beautiful country. Many of our activities take place at our outdoor education facility/lodge in Chikura, Chiba, just two hours south of Tokyo. Make use of the countryside as an outdoor classroom to “Discover Japan” - marine studies, science, culture, team building, outdoor education and more. Let us help you to design a program for your scout group, your club or your class. We welcome children, adults, families, groups and clubs to contact us and learn more about the possibilities.

Just one week before the start of the 2025-26 winter season. Nanbo Winter Camp I, with 56 strong, will leave from Tokyo Station for Shiga Kogen and the New Yokote Lodge on Dec. 20.

But before that, we’re at the Tokyo Mineral Show in Ikebukuro. Nearly 700 vendors from around the world, displaying and selling rocks, minerals and fossils.
Stop by Bunka Kaikan in Sunshine City. I’ll be on the 2nd floor at the Braun Lapidary booth. Bring the children. An amazing opportunity to discover more about the incredible world we live in.

Nanbo Winter Camps - Since 1985
There are only a few spots remaining on both our December and January Winter Camps. Three-nights and four-days at the incredible New Yokote Lodge in Shiga Kogen, high up at the top of the first chairlift for easy "ski-in and ski-out" comfort. An English language ski/board adventure for children in 2nd grade through middle school. Sledding, bingo, board games, journal writing and much more!
Ski and board lessons provided by our SAJ certified professional instructors for two full days. Supervised "free" skiing on the last day. Our emphasis is always on safety, skill development and enjoyment. Inexpensive rental equipment available. Parents are welcome to join if space is available.
Our amazing counselors, from Nanbo Discovery Camp, our summer camp in Chikura, provide 24 hour supervision and positive interaction throughout the day.
For more information, please email David at [email protected].
Looking forward to seeing you on the slopes of Shiga Kogen this season.

My apologies to those who had been following posts of our activities for children and families. We took a bit of a break from FB but are now back. We hope to share exciting news from Nanbo Kokusai Mura, Nanbo Discovery Camps and Nanbo Winter Camps moving forward.
Last winter season we had five great camps at Yokote yama in Shiga Kogen, staying at the New Yokote Lodge. Always incredible snow, great instructors, amazing counselors and ski-in/ski-out as the lodge is at the top of the first chairlift.
We had an amazing past summer of fun and growth at our five Nanbo Discovery Camps in July and August. We also had our first ever Taipei/Shanghai Children's Camp led by Selina AND the first Minami Boso Intercultural Camp organized by Michiyo and many others. Stay tuned for photos of these camps and more.
In the spring and fall we had groups visit us from a number of international schools from Nagoya, Yokohama and Tokyo.
As always, much of the credit for our success goes to our counselors. The high school and university students who work with us at our camps are an incredible group of mature, positive young adults who understand the importance of their jobs as role models and caregivers to our campers.

Just a quick update about this year’s Winter Camp season.
Our Winter Camp II from January 3-6 had been full for nearly two months. Just this morning we were given an additional
few rooms. Not sure how long they will last.
Please don’t hesitate to contact David at [email protected] if interested. It’s going to be a great season on Yokoteyama.

NANBO WINTER CAMPS
The weather is turning cooler, there are reports of snow on the mountains of Shiga Kogen and it's time to be thinking about Nanbo Winter Camps on Yokoteyama. We're heading up to Yokote at least five times this winter: Winter Camps I and II in December and January; our group of children and parents from Shanghai at the end of January; a group of students and parents from Nishimachi International School and others in February; and a 4-night/5-day Winter Camp III during spring vacation in March.
February of 2025 will be the 40th anniversary of our family adventures and our Winter Camps to Yokoteyama. It all started in February, 1985 with a group of 53 children and parents from NIS.

Our lodge of choice for the past four decades is the New Yokote midway up Yokoteyama offering ski-in/ski-out comfort. A great mix of Japanese and Western styles, we are spoiled with very clean accommodations, healthy and plentiful food, great location, incredible powder snow, and lots more.

Our English language Winter Camps are for children from 8 through 14. All campers take ski or board lessons from our professional instructors in the morning and the afternoon. Sledding, BINGO, video night, board games and journal writing round out our afternoons and evenings. Parents and younger children are always welcome at greatly reduced prices.

News from NANBO:
Session 5 is a wrap and so with it the Nanbo Discovery Camp season for 2024. Unfortunately we had to send our campers and staff home 24 hours early as the strongest typhoon in many years was due to hit landfall in the morning on Friday, the final day of camp. And it did!
We have torrential rain and very high wind and our fence of bamboo is almost touching the ground with the force of the wind coming off the ocean. All transportation has been shut down in the southern Boso area and there are reports of power outages already.
A very BIG thank you to all our camp families for being so understanding of the situation and for changing plans to meet their children at Tokyo Station a day early. We feel terrible that we couldn't complete our five-night camp but as we have been saying for 26 years, the safety of our campers and our staff is our priority. Having fun, making discoveries, eating together, and more are all in second place.
Session 5, however, was incredible. Our campers were amazing and our counselors and CIT's did everything they could to make Nanbo a very special place this past week. The campers were able to have their NGT (Nanbo's Got Talent) performance thanks to some scheduling magic. A big thanks to all, especially camp coordinator Brad Bennett, for making our final camp of the season a special one, even with Typhoon 7 bearing down on us.
We hope to see you all on another Nanbo adventure in the near future.

Nanbo Discovery Camp Session 5 Day 3.
Another amazing day of exploring the natural world by the seashore. After a busy morning of Capture the Flag, Bunkroom Cleanup and Breakfast, we explored a secret beach for collecting shells and shards of sea glass. After lunch and our usual rest time, we enjoyed playing in the surf at Minami Chikura beach. The afternoon free time was organized chaos with table tennis, badminton, baseball, volleyball and board games all happening at the same time. We enjoyed home made curry with green salad and a campfire with S’mores. The campers all sleeping soundly before 21:00.

Nanbo Discovery Camp Session Five Day 1.
We left steamy Tokyo for the green fields and blue ocean of Minami Boso. The weather has slightly cooled off and a nice breeze greeted us as we arrived at camp on our private bus. The campers were excited and ready to play on the field. We practiced our usual “Emergency procedures” and got organized in our bunk rooms before dinner and then had an introduction to our science and game paradise called “The Discovery Room” The campers enjoyed talking and meeting new friends in their bunks and it was Miraculously quiet by 21:30. We are expecting the early birds to be awake by 5:30 tomorrow!

News from Nanbo!
We're looking forward to the start of Session 5 of Nanbo Discovery Camp on Sunday, August 11. The final session of an amazing 26th summer season.
There will be 28 campers and CITs and ten staff members at camp for our final session. Each of our five sessions this summer have been completely full, with other children on the waiting list. We truly wish we could accommodate everyone. But....we are limited by the number of beds we have and the fact that we are a small camp by design.
It's important to us to have a small community of children from seven through 13 years of age and our amazing counselors who can get to know each other, learn from each other and play together regardless of age or gender.
A highlight of every session is the "name game". When one or two brave campers go around the outdoor dining deck trying to identify each member of the community by name, campers and adults. Of course, they get a "valuable prize" if they succeed.
More to come......

Nanbo Discovery Camp Session 4 Days 3,4,5
Amazing weather for the campers this week. We went to the beach every day and enjoyed the waves and tide pools. We are fortunate to be friends with the local lifesavers and beach locals. Our community of Nanbo is well known after 25+ years in the area. We had an opportunity for seaside cycling a night walk for star viewing, none of the campers complaining about walking a few kilometers in the dark. We finished off the week with journal writing and our “Nanbo’s Got Talent” performance by the bunk rooms. Theater, Dance, Jokes and Singing just a part of the show.
