Feel like going back in time tonight. 2020, June 24. Peak rainy season, and yet, one of those ridiculously clear nights when you can see to the far ends of the universe. A million trillion stars if a thousand. You and me, we're two tiny specs of that incredibleness.

Also, I think I've finally settled down enough to think about writing letters and posting more.

日本のみんなさんは元気にしているでしょうかな。今夜はタイムスリップ。

2020年6月24日。白谷雲水峡の太鼓岩へ。梅雨なのに、把握できないほど数えられない数の星空。宇宙の果てまで見えるんではないか。
うちたちは、そのコスモスの小さな一部。

ようやく落ち着きそうなので、手紙やメールとブログを書きたい。屋久島へのlove story。^^

A surprise at the local Saturday market: A Chinese gentian (shino-ornata)!

On the highest peaks of Yakushima grows an endemic gentian (yakushimensis) with similar spikey foliage and big flowers (second photo, from August 28), and I’ve always wondered....how did they get there? Did they grow at lower elevations during the ice age?

週末の市場でリンドウを発見！中国からのgentiana sino-ornata だそうです。

屋久島の奥岳のてっぺん近くだけには、固有種のヤクシマリンドウがあります。(二番目の写真、8月28)それは、どうやってその高いところに辿り着いたでしょうか？氷河期の時、標高の低いところにも分布されていたでしょうか。

Bubble universes. . .

Yesterday would have been the autumn moon festival in Yakushima. Tug-of-war and sumo and ramune. Here, the moon rises an hour later, but my neighbor says twilight is the best time for soap bubbles.

2年前、オレゴン州からのお客さんと一緒に屋久島の十五夜の行事を楽しんでました。今日は、オレゴン州で月を待ちました。近所の人はバブル世界を作ってます。

A “hike” up the neighborhood “mountain,” would be considered a walk over a wooded hill in Yakushima. But the view is extraordinary, and the weather is wonderfully dynamic! Looking forward to further and farther exploring!

近所の登山と言っても、雑木林での散歩みたいですけど、見晴らしがいいです。変わりやすい天気も気持ちいいです！山火事の防止のため、この辺ではたまにヤブを燃やしているそうですが、向こうの山の向こうの山の大自然を見に行きたくなって、、、^^

Rushing to the port two weeks ago, on my last day in Yakushima, I hardly had time to tell friends when I was leaving. (I still have some good friends I’ve yet to properly say goodbye to!) How typical of Yakushima to provide a dreary drizzle!
But the moment has been prepared for: I’ve been gifted a Type 40 TARDIS, a little blue box that can travel all of time and space (Ask google.) and take me back to Yakushima whenever I wish. . Thanks

屋久島から出た日、フェリーに間に合うかどうかもわからず、(まだ別れの挨拶の一部が出来ず、、mm)屋久島自体からのフェアウェル小雨。でも、、、お客さんから青色のボックスを頂きました。それで時間の旅ができるそうです。(TARDISという、イギリスのドラマに現れるタイムマシンです。グーグルに聞いて下さい。^^ ありがとうございます！)それで、今後とも、心の中で、いい思い出の屋久島ライフへ戻り、沢山の写真をアップさせて頂きたいと思ます。😁

This morning I was startled by a rustling outside the bathroom window: A deer. This neighborhood is full of deer! But compared to Yakushima deer (2nd photo) even the young black-tailed deer look like huge lanky dogs!

今朝、トイレに行ったら、窓の近くからガサガサ、、、シカだ！実は、この近所は黒尻尾のシカがおおいです。嬉しいけど、ヤクシカ(2番目の写真)より断然に大きく、若い者でもデッカ犬に見えます。

Busy moving into my new home in Oregon. I woke up last night and looked up to see cassiopeia through the skylight. Orientation starts today.

新しい部屋に泊まりました。夜、頭上の窓へ見上げたら、カシオペアが見えた。今日からオリエン🍂

屋久島も秋っぽくなっているでしょうかな、、、

My last few days in Yakushima were packed with so many memories—including a typhoon with waves that grew several times larger than they were at sunrise when I took this photo. I hope to write everyone back including the folks I didn’t get to say goodbye to. . . as soon as I have a few spare minutes. In the meantime, here’s to everyone’s health and safety until we meet again!

屋久島での最後の時間は濃かったですね。引っ越しの準備の上に別れの挨拶の上に台風、、、
波は特に大きかったですね。(朝の写真より倍の倍大きくなったら、風と雨で見えなくなりました。)後の片付けの代わりに引っ越しの準備に集中させて頂き、すみませんmm

最後に会えなかった数人の方もいますが、みんなさんとまた会えるまでお元気で💕🙇‍♀️
