Don’t have these big FOUR tenets of health? Until you do, nothing else matters…
The single most common mistake I see being made by people who are seemingly putting in the “effort” to become healthier but not seeing a shred of result is neglecting the major foundational health practices (above) and instead, perseverating on the minors.
I’ve seen it hundreds of times before… People who are sleeping 4 hours a night, inconsistent with their training, eating out of control a majority of days and frustrated and miserable with their lifestyle asking about which supplements to take. Or better yet, whether 5 reps is better than 6 for building functional strength…
This is what we call majoring in the minors. And it’s a mental burden at best, and a dangerous derailing debate at worst that leave many people burned out before they even get started leaving them thinking “Why does getting in shape have to be SO hard” when in actuality they made it hard by putting 90% of their energies into things that will only push the needle maybe 5% for them.
So what do I recommend based on my experience as a coach and mentor? Start with sleep. Optimize your bed time routine. Shoot for 8 or more hours of sleep per night. And stay on a consistent schedule.
From there (you should be feeling better having consistent quality sleep) start to clean up your diet. Prioritize high quality foods and monitor your quantity of food by calories and macro counts to set a baseline for what you actually need.
Exercise is next, when combined with quality diet and ample amounts of sleep for recovery, this is the perfect combination of health habits that create synergy and also lifestyle habitual consistency that can stand the test of time.
Lastly, don’t forget about passion, purpose and happiness. Live your days feeling your best mentally, physically and emotionally. It doesn’t happen automatically, like anything else in life you gotta work at it! But it’s worth the effort.
Focus on the big FOUR for health forever 🙏
