Christie wins Ravensworth Rapids tourney
Fide Master Joshua Christie, University of the West Indies student, with a perfect score of 6 points from six games secured the top spot in the Open section of the Ravensworth Rapids Chess Tournament held at the O.R. Bell auditorium, St Jago High School in Spanish Town, St. Catherine on Saturday August 23, 2025.
The Ravensworth Rapids Chess Tournament, returning to the chess event calendar for the first time 2017 attracted 39 players including a strong showing of Jamaica’s top players. These included FM Christie, ranked number 2 in the island, FM Raheem Glaves number 3, CM Akeem Brown number 6, NM Mikhail Solomon, and WFM Adani Clarke.
There were 20 players in the open and 19 in the under 1700 Contenders section.
Other placements in the Open section went to Raheem Glaves, 4.5 points, second and J-Loy Chin, St. Jago High student, 4 points in third place. Chin also won the best high school player prize.
The winner in the Contenders section (under 1700 players), Luke Wright from Creative Kids and coached by Odane “Sage” Hall, like the victor in the Open section also had a perfect 6 point score, Daniel Williams, University of Technology student, second with 5 points and Makini Thompson third with 4 points after a tie break with Tsahai Clarke, St Jago High student, Lalia Griffiths, St. Jago High student, I-Jeanae Lloyd, St Jago High student and Mario Bailey. Troy Leachman coaches the St. Jago High School students.
WCM Clarke, who placed fifth in the Open Section after a tie break with third place winner Chin and Natheniel Hope, St. Jago High student who were dead locked on 4 points, was the best female player. The best female Contender was Lloyd. The best under 12 player was Contender section winner Wright.
The Ravensworth Rapids TEAM edition will be held in December 2025, the date will be announced in September.
