For schools in the Florida Keys, coral reefs are a defining part of the world around them, just beyond the shore and impossible to ignore.

A landmark new study in Science has confirmed what we’ve witnessed firsthand: Florida’s staghorn and elkhorn corals have reached functional extinction in the wild after the record 2023 heatwave.

But there’s still hope.

Coral Restoration Foundation is one of 22 institutions behind this research — and despite extreme losses, our restoration work has prevented these species from total extinction, and kept them alive in the wild. And in our ocean nurseries, staghorn and elkhorn corals are still growing, thriving, and even spawning.

Zum ersten Mal seit 40 Jahren ist im Golf von Panama das jährliche Auftriebs-System ausgeblieben – das sonst kaltes, nährstoffreiches Wasser an die Oberfläche bringt und damit Fische, Korallen & ganze Küstenregionen am Leben hält.

Forscher sind alarmiert: Zufall oder ein weiterer Schritt in Richtung Klimakipppunkt? Ohne das Auftriebswasser fehlen Kühlung und Nährstoffe – mit fatalen Folgen für Riffe und Fischbestände.

Coral gametes are the beginning of new reefs.

During spawning, corals release eggs and s***m that join to form larvae. These larvae settle and grow into colonies, rebuilding reef ecosystems.

CRF observes spawning events and collects gametes to support research and cryopreservation with outside collaborators. These efforts help safeguard genetic diversity for the reefs of tomorrow.
