Sprint hurdler Megan Simmonds led the way on what was a fairly successful day for Jamaican athletes at the Golden Gala Pietro Mennea Diamond League meet in Rome, Italy yesterday. Simmonds, the only winner for Jamaica, raced to a season's best 12.50 seconds to capture the 100m hurdles. Former world record holder Kendra Harrison of the United States was second in 12.52, while Nadine Visser of the Netherlands was third in 12.58. Jamaica's Danielle Williams was sixth in a season's best 12.69.

The Jamaica Public Service (JPS) says a system failure is behind tonight’s islandwide power outage and that it has activated its Incident Command Centre as efforts get under way to restore electricity to customers in a phased and pre-determined manner.

The company says it is also investigating the cause of the incident.

Energy Minister Daryl Vaz has reported an island-wide blackout Friday evening, and says he is awaiting an update from the Jamaica Public Service Company.

In a post on X about 30 minutes ago, Vaz said the JPS president Hugh Grant is en route to the company’s emergency operations centre.

Firefighters are responding to a blaze at a building at Up Park Camp in St Andrew, the headquarters of the Jamaica Defence Force, says Jamaica Fire Brigade Commissioner Stewart Beckford.

“We are fighting an active fire at Up Park Camp,” Beckford told The Gleaner on Friday evening.

No further details were immediately available.
