LOOK AT THE EVIDENCE Government of Jersey Jersey Sport
Urgent clarity is being asked for by the government right now. Our first two requests were simpleβ¦
1. The government should provide the scientific evidence that gyms are less safe OR that they are directly contributing to the spread of COVID cases in Jersey.
2. If the government are NOT able to provide this evidence, then we are requesting that the government amends their new measures β to rescind the inclusion of gyms from the lists of businesses to close, and allow them to safely re-open at the earliest opportunity
Gyms are being operated in a very safe and mindful way. This is reflected in DATA and the prevalence of COVID within the sector has been extremely low and this is not only down to the customers but also the gyms as a whole.
We cannot find ANY data in relation to Jersey with regards to Gyms & COVID. However, our own research details the following facts from the UK in October (no data in November due to lockdown) which has just reopened gyms nationally in light of findings even in the strictest of tiers. These are:
FACTS:
- 22, 000,000 (22 million) visits to gyms resulted in the extremely low figure of only 78 COVID cases. UK gyms showing just 0.35 cases per 100,000 visits https://www.ukactive.com/news/fitness-and-leisure-sector-reports-covid-rate-of-0-34-per-100000-visits-since-reopening-in-england
- Transmission exposure by setting. Gyms were ONLY showing 1.7% percent of cases, almost THE LEAST of any other sector (Picture attached to post). Whereas Pubs and Bars show 14%, Restaurants 9.6% and Supermarkets at 6.3%!!! https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-derbyshire-54464470.
- Male su***de is now at an all-time high - https://www.bmj.com/content/370/bmj.m3431. Further supported by this https://academic.oup.com/qjmed/article/113/10/707/5857612 which discusses su***de, mental health and COVID
THIS IS A MESS!
This will impact the health of the island. we have hundreds of members in Jersey who will face the real threat of closure and job losses. The health of the people of Jersey will be damaged by this because their physical and mental wellbeing will be impacted by the inability to use their facilities in which they depend on hugely.
We will keep fighting tirelessly.
We will keep fighting collectively with gyms across Jersey.
We will keep fighting to KEEP OUR GYMS OPEN
