For most of the history of sports science, the female athlete did not exist. Not in the research.

The majority of endurance studies were conducted on male subjects. The findings were then applied to female athletes as though physiology were universal. As though hormones did not influence substrate utilisation. As though the menstrual cycle did not affect recovery. As though the health risks of chronic under-fuelling were simply not there.

Chapter Four of The Endurance Athlete's Answer Book addresses the territory that has no male equivalent. The menstrual cycle and performance. RED-S and how to recognise it. Hormonal contraception and training adaptation. Bone health and stress fractures. The female athlete triad. Perimenopause and menopause. Nutritional needs specific to female endurance athletes.

Female athletes deserve coaching built on their physiology. Not an approximation of someone else's.
