Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that includes music, song and acrobatics. It develops good balance, strength and stamina, spatial awareness and physical confidence. Corujinha has been teaching Capoeira in Jersey on and off for 20 years. Starting out in Florianopolis with Mestre Pop and Grupo Aú, during her study year abroad in Florianopolis in 1998-99 and then a month at Sul da Bahia Aca
demy in Arriail D'Ajuda. She went to complete her dissertation on the Institutionalisation of Capoeira at Portsmouth University and travelled to Spain where she trained with Abada and Professor Paçoca and Instrutor Teco in Barcelona 2000-2002. Following that she moved to Cardiff for work and trained for one year with Claudio and Beribazu Bristol also helping establish Cardiff's first Capoeira group under Mestre Maxwell. She then returned to Jersey and established the Jersey Capoeira Association teaching in schools, the Arts Centre, Sports Centres and Gyms and more. She visited Brazil often during this period and experience many different styles of Capoeira to broaden her spectrum and knowledge. In 2009 with itchy feet once more she embarked on a career change and became a tour guide which took her to Europe and then Australia where she ended up with Filhos da Bahia, Melbourne. She trained there for 3 years and then returned home to Jersey to spend time with her ailing father. Jersey Capoeira Association was reborn and during that period the group would perform at all of the music festivals and parades on offer at the time. Despite Covid and a busy work schedule, family time and getting married the Jersey Capoeira Association is still strong and growing. Corujinha is firmly on her path and ready to embark on the next phase of her journey as Capoeira and guide.
