Marmolada ⛰️ is the undisputed queen of the Dolomites (Italy) 🇮🇹 This summer I finally had the privilege of climbing on the impeccable grey limestone of its south face. I got to taste the history of Marmolada through the "Fish", accompanied by Pietro Dal Pra, as well as its presence through Egoland, accompanied by Berni Rivadossi 🤜🤛 Marmolada played an important role in climbing history, as well as in Czechoslovak climbing, as the first ascent of "Fish" was done by Igor Koller (SK 🇸🇰) and Jindra Šustr (CZ 🇨🇿) back in 1981 ✊ Fish quickly became a myth, an extreme classic that is sought for its beauty, but it will never become a walk in the park. Unlike many myths, the myth of Fish is extremely well deserved. It is one of the most stunning and best routes I have ever tried. And doing it with a good friend of mine, Pietro dal Pra, was icing on the cake 👌

Egoland is a modern route with pitches up to 8c, rock so perfect that it is hard to believe it exists in the alpine environment ☝️One of the first ascensionists, Berni Rivadossi, is also a good friend of mine, and it was a joy to share the rope with him. I tried to onsight it, but I was happy to walk away with a one-day repetition 👊

Marmoláda ⛰️ je nespornou královnou Dolomit 🇮🇹 Letos v létě jsem měl konečně tu čest lézt po dokonalém šedém vápenci její jižní stěny. Mohl jsem okusit historii Marmolády na cestě přes Rybu v doprovodu mého přítele Pietra Dal Pra, stejně jako její majestátnost na cestě „Egoland“ společně s Bernim Rivadossim 🤜🤛 Marmoláda sehrála důležitou roli v historii skalního lezení jako takového, stejně jako v československé lezecké historii, protože první výstup cesty přes Rybu uskutečnili již v roce 1981 Igor Koller 🇸🇰 a Jindra Šustr 🇨🇿 ✊ Fish se rychle stala mýtem, extrémní klasikou, která je vyhledávaná pro svou krásu, ale nikdy z ní nebude procházka růžovým sadem. Na rozdíl od mnoha mýtů je mýtus o Rybě naprosto zasloužený. Je to jedna z nejúchvatnějších a nejlepších cest, jaké jsem kdy vyzkoušel. A to, že jsem ji zdolal se svým dobrým přítelem Pietrem, bylo třešničkou na dortu 👌

Egoland je moderní cesta s délkami až do obtížnosti 8c. Skála je tak dokonalá, že je těžké uvěřit, že vůbec existuje v alpském prostředí ☝️ Její první přemožitel, Berni Rivadossi, je také mým dobrým přítelem a bylo mi potěšením s ním sdílet lano. Egoland jsem se původně pokusil vylézt onsight, ale nakonec jsem byl spokojený, že jsem si odnesl jednodenní zopakování 👊

Some climbs leave a mark long before you reach the summit.

For weeks, Babsi Zangerl and Jacopo Larcher built their days around Déjà: chasing the right conditions, protecting their skin from sharp limestone, and learning patience on one of the hardest pitches they had ever tried on a multi-pitch route.

“The Rätikon feels like home to both of us, but this project let us experience it in a completely different way. Almost every day felt like a little mission. It was adventure climbing in a place we know so well, and that’s something we’ll remember for a long time.”

For Babsi, the route became part of something bigger than climbing itself. “For months after my back injury, climbing had been something my body struggled to recover from. Then I reached a point where climbing actually started helping my recovery. That changed everything. It gave me motivation again, and reaching the summit of Déjà felt like a real comeback.”

Déjà is a story about returning: to a place that feels like home, to a route Jacopo first tried with Fabi Buhl in 2015 and later revisited with Babsi, and, for Babsi, to climbing at her highest level.

Some routes become legends. Others become part of your story.

For Déjà began more than ten years ago, when he first explored the line with Fabi Buhl. At the time, the route was still an unanswered question, with a crux pitch that had never been free climbed.

“There’s always something special about trying something that hasn’t been done before. You don’t know if it’s possible, and every move you free climb feels like a little gift,” Jacopo recalls from those early days on the project.

In 2019, Fabi Buhl made the first free ascent of the route. Years later, in 2025, Déjà became a shared project with .

With razor-sharp holds, extreme summer temperatures, and only a handful of good attempts before their skin gave out, every day on the wall became a small mission. Early starts, evening sessions, and countless attempts all had the same goal: finding a way through.

After weeks of work, Babsi reached the summit, redpointing every pitch along the way. Following a long injury break, the ascent meant far more than simply climbing a difficult route.

“After such a long injury break, this route meant so much to me. It wasn’t only about the difficulty. It felt like a real comeback.”

A few days later, it was Jacopo’s turn. He completed the route in the same style, reaching the summit after a connection with the line that had lasted more than a decade.

Standing together on top gave Déjà a meaning that went far beyond the route itself. A story of perseverance, partnership, and shared adventure in a place that has always felt like home.
