EN: The Ferrari SF-26's first win has arrived, but it wasn't a coincidence: Ferrari is the team that has introduced the most updates since the start of the year and has changed a lot about the car, which began its first runs in Barcelona over the winter. There was never a revolution in the initial concept, as Red Bull did with the RB22, but rather a refinement in every area of the car. The first stage of evolutions took place in Miami, then in Catalonia the new front wing, the new body combined with the new floor and new rear wheels debuted, giving Loic Serra's car the edge it deserves to compete on equal terms with Mercedes, which is currently one step behind in the race for updates, having only introduced substantial changes in Canada.

EN: It was only a matter of time before Haas introduced Ferrari's Flick Tail Mode system. Sharing the entire rear-end mechanicals (engine, gearbox, and rear suspension) with the SF-26, the VF-26 was effectively the only car that could certainly accommodate Ferrari's solution, which cleverly exploits the legality boxes. Thanks to the differential's 60mm rearward positioning, the tailbox is moved further back, allowing for an extension along the Z-axis, which can be used to implement the aerodynamic profiles in front of the engine exhaust to direct hot air toward the lower part of the rear wing. Haas' solution is slightly different, and the profiles don't fully exploit the upward extension.

The "two-phase" front wing issue, as I chose to call it, arose during the 2026 Chinese GP, when some videos showed that the Mercedes front wing appeared to close in two distinct moments (two-phase) rather than in one rapid movement. This raised suspicions that the team might be exploiting a "gray area" in the regulations, which mandates a closure within 400 milliseconds.

This more gradual movement would help limit the migration of downforce to the front end during braking, unloading the rear of the car, something that is always avoided when braking and entering corners.

In Japan, after inspections, the FIA clarified that there was no trick: the anomalous behavior was due to a technical error (poorly calibrated hydraulic pressure) that slowed the winglet closure.

Aerodynamically, Aston Martin is certainly the most interesting car to analyze, and it's truly a shame that it's plagued by serious mechanical issues. In Australia, another interesting solution emerged on the initial section of the floor, with two flow diverters for an outwash effect. The ingenious part, bordering on what legality boxes allow, involves lowering the height of the upper section of the floor by excavating the surface that runs along the front of the lateral SIS structure.

Ferrari's exhaust spoiler is an example of how to best exploit the technical regulations. The extension around the tail box (RV tail) acts as a true extension of the diffuser. Extending the surface area up to the exhaust, deflecting the flow upwards, offers some aerodynamic benefits and exploits one interpretation of point 9.5.1. Ferrari would have modified the gearbox design by moving the differential rearward, based on the fact that the regulations allow a 60 mm differential along the X-axis behind (or in front of) the wheel centreline. Moving the differential rearward also involves a direct rearward translation of the tailgate, which, updated on December 15, also allows for extension along the Z-axis (vertical axis). Therefore, the exhaust spoiler, since the RV Tail is a tapered box, uses the maximum permitted volume. The "diffuser extension" is not exactly a new idea, it was already seen for example in 2021 but not up to the exhaust level.

Ferrari has changed a lot of the front suspension compared to 2025. The return to pushrod isn’t the only change, but there has been a radical redesign of all the components and the position of the wishbones. The upper arm has been significantly lowered, and the steering has been repositioned rearward, as Mercedes had already done Mercedes and McLaren

The three modes for active aerodynamics, a different management than the DRS used since 2011. The speed delta will be wider than with DRS alone, offering a wide range of choices regarding the number of elements to move and their positioning. We will certainly see a convergence towards a more effective mobile wings solution over time. The drawing is the McLaren MCL40.
