NATO College Foundation Our mission is “to promote the culture of stability and well-being in the North Atlantic area” and in Partner nations.

The principles stated in the Preamble to the Washington Treaty of 1949 are our heritage. It grew out from a common intuition of the President Alessandro Minuto-Rizzo and the NATO Defense College top decision-makers who understood the value of a non-profit NGO that could work beyond usual and institutional outreach, training, communication and scientific research activities. Our mission is to promo

te the culture of stability and well-being in the North Atlantic area and in NATO partner nations. Our aim is to meet the highest standards in contributing to public debate and future deliberations on strategic, security and geopolitical issues. We foster dialogue through education, research and outreach to the challenges that we are confronting. Our scientific research consists of several activities: Strategic Trends, Food for thought, International conferences, High-level seminars, advisory panels.

NATO is entering a period of heightened strategic uncertainty, shaped by overlapping crises, shifting power balances and diverging interests among Allies.

The war in Ukraine has elevated the Black Sea to a central theatre of Euro-Atlantic security, while instability across the Eastern Mediterranean and wider Middle East has turned key maritime routes and energy corridors into strategic pressure points. Security is increasingly systemic, not just territorial.

Meanwhile, the growing relevance of the Caucasus and Central Asia, China’s expanding regional footprint, and uncertainty over future US engagement are pushing NATO to reassess its long-term direction.

The upcoming 2026 Ankara Summit offers a key opportunity for strategic reset across cyber, energy, infrastructure and collective defence.

Ultimately, NATO’s challenge is not expansion or discipline, but maintaining coherence in a fragmented world.

The Middle Corridor is steadily evolving into one of the most important connectivity projects linking Central Asia and Europe. Backed by major infrastructure investments and growing regional cooperation, the route is strengthening east–west trade flows while offering an increasingly viable alternative to traditional transit corridors.

The expanding role of Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, combined with projects such as the China–Kyrgyzstan–Uzbekistan railway and new logistics hubs, is reshaping the geography of Eurasian connectivity and reinforcing the strategic importance of the Caspian region.

International financial institutions are taking notice, committing billions of dollars to modernisation and infrastructure development. Yet the long-term success of these ambitions will depend also on preserving the stability that has underpinned the region's growth.

Artificial intelligence is changing warfare, but its greatest danger may not lie in the machine itself.

As AI systems become embedded in intelligence and military decision-making, the real risk is often more subtle: the amplification of human biases, flawed assumptions and distorted perceptions.

From overconfidence and groupthink to AI “hallucinations” and misclassification, small errors can scale rapidly, carrying profound consequences for civilians and international stability.

At the same time, drones, autonomous systems and the rise of OSINT and ADINT are transforming the character of conflict, lowering political and psychological barriers while increasing the speed of decision-making.

The challenge is to preserve human judgement, cultivate dissent, and build safeguards against our own cognitive blind spots.

Libya: a new proxy battleground

Libya’s fractured authority has created space for external powers, with Russian forces backing eastern factions and Ukrainian operatives reported in the west. The country has effectively become a stage for wider geopolitical competition.

Ukrainian drone activity is also said to be targeting Russia’s “shadow fleet” in the Mediterranean, extending the conflict beyond the Black Sea and increasing tensions at sea.

Meanwhile, weak borders are allowing arms and drone proliferation across the Sahel towards Sudan, fuelling instability and undermining international embargoes across the region.

As debates over burden-sharing evolve into calls for burden-shedding, questions about NATO’s future are gaining prominence within US policy circles.

Yet the Alliance’s record tells a different story: over seven decades of strategic adaptability, collective deterrence, military integration and political cohesion. Far from constraining US interests, NATO has repeatedly been evolved alongside them.
