A little known story about me
Memories of a past life - Rome, Italy, April 8, 2005.
Let me preface this with a statement that I'm not religious but I'm fiercely supporting freedom of worship as it is nobody's business but your own.
Now onto the memory.
When Pope John Paul II passed, I was in St Peter's Square in Rome, for his funeral, as part of a diplomatic delegation accompanying my then boss, a head of State. It was a very solemn day and moment. Very heavy atmosphere. Very dark.
Today's funeral ceremony for Pope Francis comes at a heavy time for the world so I can't imagine how it must have felt.
I don't have pictures from that day. But I've kept the booklets (or what do you call them?) that I'm sharing here. And the black mantilla. It's that black lace veil that women are required by protocol to cover their heads with -- you can see it everywhere on the footage and pictures from today. I still have mine and only wore it once, for the Pope's funeral.
Until I picked up these booklets from my bookshelves just now, I had forgotten how April 8, 2005 was a key date in my personal and professional path.
That day was also a turning point in my life as I decided right there and then to remove myself from my employment. This is when my path towards leadership coaching opened up and how my interest in ethics got fueled insatiably.
The years spent inside the close circle of powers (plural) taught me a lot and gave me the tools I use today to gauge politics and characters every damn day.
After 7 years in financial journalism, I'd wanted to no longer be on the sidelines but in the middle of where decisions were made and actions were taken. But on April 8, 2005, as we bid goodbye to John Paul II, I decided that I wanted to be in the crowd and hold a different kind of light. I took a few more turns until I embraced coaching full time again in 2017 but it's really strange how I forgot about this.
