They call Modica the "living nativity scene" because of its scenic historical center that lights up magically by night. I call it the city of stars. Let me show you why I fell in love with Modica 4 years ago ✨
The hike 🥾🌿
Modica Bassa is roughly shaped like an X and is divided into four hills. We’ll walk up and down all four of them and admire the old town from different perspectives as the sun sets and the light slowly shifts from yellow to orange to blue and finally to black. We’ll begin our tour in “my” neighborhood, Vignazza—a non-touristy but very lively part of the old town. We’ll wind our way through narrow alleys up to a viewpoint with a panoramic view of the castle and its striking clock, catching a glimpse of the sunset. A narrow path leads us through the Giacanta neighborhood and down the stairs to the main street. We’ll explore just a small part of Monserrato Hill in the south and then cross over to the other side to climb up to the Dente district and walk through Cartellone in the western part of the city, where we can enjoy breathtaking views of Modica Alta and the Cathedral of San Giorgio. Last but not least, we’ll tackle the climb to Santa Lucia and the castle before ending the tour back in the Vignazza neighborhood.
❗ Please note: This is not a guided tour, but rather a city trek. We’ll focus more on the natural factors that have shaped this valley than on architecture or politics. This tour is intended for people who enjoy hiking and are used to climbing and descending many stairs.
