Double handed sailing team on J-109 “Jubilee”, based in CNTL Yacht Club in Marseille and sailed by Jonathan Bordas & Gerald Boess

For those of you who followed the race, you might have noticed a rather unusual course for Jubilee. After a very intense first night at sea which brought us ahead of the small J109 pack, we spotted that the deck ring around the mast was about to fully come out of the deck, putting a major threat on the rig. After seeking shelter in Reggio de Calabre and despite our best efforts, we could not secure it back in place and had to retire from the race.

We spent the following 2 days sailing the boat back with a reefed mainsail and arrived back in Malta on Tuesday night. Funny enough, it took us about 3 days and 11 hours not to complete the course, which was almost exactly the time computed by our routings before the start!

We are obviously disappointed, but glad that the boat sustained no more serious damages and could be repaired in Malta.

Special congratulations to Solenn for Pure Ocean, Foggy Dew and Jaganda, our JPK friends for their impressive performance on the race, and to our favorite J109 competitors, the Jarhead Young Sailors Foundation, for completing the course in particularly rough conditions towards the end!

Looking forward to coming back next year!

Tomorrow is race start day💥! We are thrilled to be back in Malta again for our 2nd Rolex Middle Sea Race on Jubilee. Weather is promising to be very different to last year, meaning a faster race but also sailing in the edge more often, it will be all about being fast AND safe.
Thanks once again Royal Malta Yacht Club for this great event!

CORSICA MED - MACINAGGIO UPDATE

After a very fast race to Macinaggio, Jubilee is now waiting for the wind to calm down a bit and for the organization to find the right weather window to send us back.

🎬⛵️ “BON DÉPART” - Leg 1 started very well: after a (very) good start and first hours, we were at the fore front of the double handed fleet, sailing fast towards Corsica

👮‍♂️💣 “SHOOTING RANGE” - Around 11pm, things changed. We, together with the A35 Archi Med and the J11 Yelkouan, were making great progress East, when the French navy called, ordering the 3 of us to head South for 1 hour to avoid the active shooting range - basic mistake which cost us a lot!

🚀7️⃣ “FAST LEG” - The rest of the race was a very fast downwind leg to Giraglia, but offered limited opportunities to make up for the losses of the night. Despite a fast rounding of the cape, we finish 7th in double handed, and will have a uphill battle to fight in the way back to make up for it.

💨🌊⛔️ “APERÇU” - Wind is blowing on Cape Corse, reaching 40kts in the marina overnight, which forced the organization to postpone the start and potentially adapt the race course to keep the fleet safe. Next update on this in a few hours. In the meantime, all crews are getting the boats ready for rough conditions, and enjoy the fantastic welcome from Macinaggio!

CORSICA MED - RACE START DAY 🚥

At 1pm, Jubilee will start leg 1 of Corsica Med, from Marseille to Macinaggio. We expect light wind at the start then a (very) long downwind leg all the way to Cap Corse, with breeze building to 20-25kts as we get closer to the finish.

24 boats gathered at CNTL Marseille Vieux Port will be on the starting line, of which 13 double handed, promising very intense competition!
Special fair wind to the 3 Mini 6.50 taking the start!

IT’S A WIN !! 🥇🍾💥

Jubilee crossed the line at 7:15am on Friday, meaning:
- 1st IRC Double Handed
- 1st Line Honors Double Handed
- 1st IRC 2
- 3rd IRC Overall!!

However, the rules of Giraglia race are that double handed boats are not ranked with the rest of the fleet, so we "only" sail back with the Double Handed trophies on board.

But what a race! We rounded Giraglia at sunset on Thursday after 24 hours of upwind beat in 4 to 20 knots of wind, then started what was the best leg of the race: a very, very fast reach to Genova in 25 knots, covering the 80+ miles to the gulf in only 9 hours, but allowing little to no sleep. Jubilee was flashed at 16.8knots on a wave, and had a few crazily long surfs. The last hours were, as usual, nerve wrecking, in very light airs, with the lack of sleep only increasing the pressure.

Thank you Yacht Club Italiano for a fantastic welcoming over the past 2 days! We can’t wait to come back next year, meet our friends again, and race such an iconic course!

DAY 1 UPDATE

There is a very recent tradition onboard Jubilee: on the first evening offshore, there must be a calzone on the menue (the only pizza that fits in the oven).

There are however a few more unusual features tonight:
1) enjoying an amazing sunset
2) being the first IRC 2 boat rounding the mark in Agay
3) owing all of the above to our shore team and more precisely Victor Grosjean, who remotely fixed 100% of our instruments and the autopilot that goes with them - all of which had decided not to wake up 1 hour before race start 😱

Now on our way to Giraglia rock, expecting some stronger winds, and hoping for the best 🤞

RACE START DAY

Giraglia offshore race is starting today! All weather conditions are on the menu for the 240 nautical miles to come.

Rallying race ended up with a very good 5th place overall, 2nd in IRC 2 against fully crewed boats. Game on for double handed competition now!
