Archaeologists in Norway have discovered a Viking sword in a grave that dates back to the 800s-900s. The sword was found during the excavation of a farm and burial ground from Viking times in Vinjeøra, south of Trøndelag county.
The sword was found on the left side of the deceased, which is unusual as swords are normally placed on the right side in weapon graves. Archaeologists believe that the sword may have been placed on the left side because the warrior was left-handed.

The grave also contained the remains of three other warriors, who were buried in the ditch surrounding one of the large burial mounds on the site. This suggests that it was considered an honor to be buried in a ditch near important ancestors.
In the same ring ditch, archaeologists also discovered a cremation grave of a woman who was buried with a large amount of bones. This is unusual as cremation graves from the Iron Age typically contain only about 250 grams of bone.

Archaeologists believe that the bones may have been actively used in some kind of ritual, as the bones of ancestors were ascribed magical properties in Viking culture.
