Cleaning tack room and study

Recently, a student told me: “With my previous trainer, I had the impression that I had bought a catastrophe of a horse. It was only about how the hind legs don’t step forward etc.”
I think that’s where we have to be a bit careful as academic trainers! Yes we see a lot, yes we are trained to evaluate movement. And honestly, there will always be something to improve. However, the most important thing is, that we enjoy the time with our horses! And that’s what I wish for my students, too. (Some horses are complicated rehab cases. I’m not talking about those.)

When the human starts to see only mistakes, the horse will lose the interest in the training or start to get tense. Just like our partner will not be motivated to get back home when all he or she will hear ist how much they are at fault.

Or course, I would like to develop with my horses and I also wish that for my students. But spending time well together should always be priority, because that’s what you will remember once your horse is not there anymore. So we have to find a balance between improving movement and accepting the horse for what it is. As a trainer, I do not want my students to think less of their horses, just because there are some physical limitations or psychological challenges.

I know you want answers

I know, in the frantic noise of the world, you stand with a horse
In trouble
Seeking help

Or maybe the one in trouble is you

I know it feels urgent
And it is

But
Theory is cheap-

knowledge is like sand
That slips between your fingers
if you grasp for it too hard

Your practice by day is the planting of seeds in rows
And no amount of watering
Or sunlight
Can rush the timeline of growth

They say many inventions were designed in a dream
It’s in the dark these roots unfurl

So learn
Practice
Try
And then sit with the discomfort and the unknowing

It’s the spaces in between
Where we find our answers
For the horse, and for ourselves

You enter the field/paddock with your halter and a lot of exciting plans, but the moment your horse sees you he walks the other way. I totally forgot that this is a pretty common problem, because it hasn’t happened to me in many years. But, it did happen to me in the past and it left me very frustrated.

If your horse doesn’t want to come to you, it means that what usually happens after the halter is on, is something the horse isn’t really happy about. This could be the training, a pain issue (regarding tack or body) or maybe the horse is not comfortable (yet) leaving the herd. The solution obviously depends on the cause of the problem, so if your horse doesn’t want the halter on, I would start with figuring this out. In the meantime I would spend a lot of time in the paddock/pasture, doing nothing. Undemanding time, with no hidden agenda. Show up, be there, don’t expect anything. If the horse comes, awesome - just give a treat or a scratch or whatever without any intention of putting a halter on. Just do this until the horse is fully okay again with being haltered and then you can figure out why the problem occured in the first place. Does the tack still fit? How is the training? Do you really understand your horse and listen to him? Et cetera.

The other advice is often see online is to send your horse away from you and make him run until he is so exhausted that coming to you seems the best option. Only because the other option is worse. That works as well, but does it sound like a nice solution? Don’t think so! There are always multiple ways to solve a problem. Choose the kindest one, as this is the one that builds the strongest foundation ❤️

The next time you see someone begin a post with, "I had the most wonderful ride (or training session) with my horse today".... pay attention to what they say next.

As equestrians we are conditioned to equate "good" with feelings of cooperation from the horse. As in, the horse willingly did what we asked, softly, without resistance. The horse was relaxed, attentive, responsive, supple. Full of "try".

What does it say about us that this type of ride or training session feels so wonderful and the ones where the horse is resistant, uncooperative, unwilling, grumpy or unable to be present (or to accomplish the goal we set for ourselves and them) feel like failures?

The horse industry teaches us that a "good leader" is someone horses will trust and follow unconditionally, no matter what. The same industry then convinces us we should spend a lifetime (and a small fortune) learning how to become this kind of leader.

But what the industry ACTUALLY taught me was how to "train" horses to become (or pretend to be) blind followers.

Be careful what you let the horse industry teach you. Because narcissistic beliefs about leadership (and the appropriateness of being a compliant follower) are very challenging mindsets to unlearn.

Pic is of me and Shoki from many years ago. I learned a lot from our journey together, but the most important lessons came late in our 22 year friendship. At one time I was proud of this photo (and what it represented). Today it makes me wish I had spent much more of my precious time with this profound sage listening to (and learning from) him rather than training him to feed my ego.
