Have you ever considered trying Scurry & Trials Driving?
As the governing body for this unique and exciting carriage driving discipline in the UK, British Scurry & Trials Driving (BSTD) is committed to promoting, developing and growing the sport, providing a structured competition calendar, training opportunities and a welcoming environment for drivers of all ages and experience levels.
Unlike traditional scurry driving, competitors can take part with a wide variety of turnouts including singles, pairs, teams, tandems and even unicorns.
A typical course combines speed, accuracy and skill. Competitors negotiate a series of obstacles against the clock, usually including:
🔹 A U-Box or Elbow
🔹 A Slalom
🔹 Cones
🔹1 or 2 obstacles lettered A - E
🔹 Maybe even a Bridge or Water Tray
One of the things our competitors enjoy most is the opportunity to travel to some fantastic country shows across the UK, spending weekends with a friendly community of like-minded drivers, grooms and supporters. Whether you’re new to the sport or an experienced whip looking for something different, you’ll always find a warm welcome in the collecting ring.
Scurry & Trials Driving is also one of the most affordable carriage driving disciplines available.
Once registered with BSTD, entry fees are currently just:
🔹 £25 for Novice competitors
🔹 £40 for Open competitors
And unlike many equestrian disciplines, competitors also have the opportunity to win prize money at our events, helping to offset fuel costs and making weekends away that little bit more affordable.
You also don’t need a specialist scurry carriage to take part. Any suitable four-wheeled competition carriage can be used, making it an ideal discipline for drivers already involved in other carriage driving sports.
And don’t worry – you don’t need to be the fastest to enjoy it. Many competitors begin by concentrating on accuracy, confidence and building experience before gradually increasing the pace. Every competitor starts somewhere, and there’s plenty of support along the way.
Whether you’re looking to find fifth gear, build confidence in a young horse or pony, challenge yourself in a new discipline or simply enjoy weekends away with friends, Scurry & Trials Driving has something to offer.
Throughout the season, competitors have the opportunity to travel to a variety of county shows and carriage driving events, with championship points up for grabs at every outing. Whether your goal is simply to have fun or to compete at the highest level, there’s a place for you within BSTD.
