Most pilots meet their first spin by accident.

To me that is backwards. A spin you understand is a tool. It turns the wing fast when you need to be somewhere other than where you are, which matters the day someone flies at you and there is no other exit. And when one does catch you out, your hands already know the answer, because you have been there on purpose, over water, with a boat underneath you.

The more we play with spins, the less likely we are to spin one by accident.

Once rotations, collapses have been trained and understood, we move on to autorotations !

In this video, the pilot has already completed several autorotations and is now working on full understanding of the manoeuvre as a choice.

GRAND ADVENTURE AUGUST
The Grand Adventure is open for August. 1st to 9th.
Quick story on why this is landing in your inbox in June for an August trip.

We had a competition planned for these dates and it got cancelled. At the same time, a few of you told me you wanted to do the Grand Adventure this year, but the trip we are starting this Saturday was full. So instead of leaving those August dates empty, we're offering to run the Grand Adventure instead.

Here is what it is. Nine days, seven of them flying, from Nice to Geneva across the French Alps. We pick you up at Nice airport, the van carries the gear, and we chase the best weather across the range. You bring your own camping kit, packed small. Some nights are a campsite, some a hotel, some a field. €2,250.

It is not a soft trip. The days are long, there is a lot of driving, and you fly on your own judgment. You read the valley, pick your landing, and decide for yourself. You make the calls with us about the Weather, the next take-off, the route, where we sleep, detailed debrief after each flight. You leave flying the Alps better than you arrived.

Who should train backfly?
Not every pilot needs competition-level backfly control. But every pilot who flies in turbulent conditions, who leads others in the air, or who wants to genuinely understand their glider's behaviour, should have at least one deliberate backfly experience under supervision.
If you have never felt your glider behind you and stayed calm, you have a blind spot. SIV is the place to close it.
