Parkrun Event #313: Lucca (Mura di Lucca)
I was incredibly lucky to squeeze in this stunning parkrun just before our flight home. The timing was tight, but as someone originally from Chester, a fellow walled city, I was intrigued by the idea of running the historic walls of Lucca. I had to find a way to make it to the start line for Run #313 and I’m really glad I did.
Here is what I loved about it.
The Welcome
The event kicked off with buzzing energy. There was a combined first-timers and welcome briefing delivered in both Italian (by Roberto) and English (by Run Director Steve).
The event drew a crowd of 147 participants, including tourists from the USA, England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Australia, Norway, Poland, Turkey, and across Italy. It felt like an international parkrun family get together!
The Course
Because the walls of Lucca are just under 5km, the course begins with a small clockwise add-on loop. Once that’s ticked off, you complete one full and fabulous anti-clockwise lap of the city walls. As RD Steve wisely advised, “Stay on the walls and you won’t get lost!"
The path is paved and while it feels mostly flat, there are a few deceptive sections where you might feel a slight incline! Much of the route is beautifully shaded by trees, though there are a couple of stretches near the end where you can enjoy or like me, melt under the Italian sun. Luckily though, this course is probably the only course with its own inbuilt drinks stations which is handy for a drink or splash to cool you down!
This is a prime PB (Personal Best) course, but it’s equally perfect for walkers and first-timers.
Accessibility
This is one of the most accessible courses I’ve encountered. There is a ramp up to the wall, making the entire route buggy-friendly. For those who might need a breather, there are benches nestled in the shade along the entire route.
If you’re a bit nervous of participating because of mobility challenges, this is the event for you. The path is wide, chilled, friendly, and entirely pressure-free. The volunteers are wonderful and truly make you feel like you’re among friends.
An event with personality
The event was delivered with a cheeky sense of humour. RD Steve reminded us all to enjoy the run but warned us not to get too distracted by the spectacular sights or the delicious smells wafting from the city below. He wasn't joking, the aroma of fresh Italian coffee and pastries was a serious test of willpower! My favorite moment? As we finished the initial small loop and prepared to head out for the full lap, Roberto was waiting with a sign that said, “last lap" Which made me chuckle! I must bring my eye roll emoji sign with me next time!
Final thoughts
Where better than Italy to "carb-load" for an event? The local pizza and pasta in Lucca are exceptional and provided the perfect fuel for my run.
Thank you, Lucca parkrun, for a wonderful memory and a beautiful final morning in Italy. To anyone considering it, just do it!
