March in Liguria - spring is here 🌸🌼!
Our hike in the Natural Park of Portofino started in the charming town Santa Margherita Ligure. Ps: now is a good time to spot wild orchids in the park 🪻

🌼 February in Liguria 🌼

Hiking from to with friends and their kids on a perfect sunny Tuesday.
That day was simply a gift 💝!
And as an extra highlight we were lucky enough to observe a group of bottlenose dolphins 🐬 from high above 🤩.

Today was a warm and sunny Sunday in December ☀️, perfect for a hike to Monte Rossola, off the beaten path and definitely worth it! If you choose to reach the summit from the south side, a steep climb is required before reaching the twin peaks (563 m). But today our destination was , right next to the trail. Lunch with , cuculli, Genoese ravioli, and more was super tasty! Highly recommended!

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Genoese Moments 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Recently I spent a weekend in Genoa to participate in an outdoor first aid course. For us guides, it is very important to refresh these skills regularly. It was also a welcome opportunity to meet up with colleagues and spend time together in our Ligurian capital.

Manarola, Cinque Terre National Park.

Vertical vineyards and dry-stone walls. A unique landscape where nature, agriculture, and villages coexist on the steep slopes.
And beyond the colorful houses by the sea, there's so much to discover.

☀️summer time in Cinque terre ☀️

To be honest, it is not the best season for hiking, as it is warm and the steep climbs make you sweat pretty much. But, if you leave very early (and with plenty of water) you can enjoy:
* the quiet of the villages before the visitors arrive
* few people on the trail
* great views and calm, crystal-clear sea

🌼 Most wildflowers have now finished blooming, but some plants give their best right now. This is the case of Agave americana (photo nr. 2). Agave grows on steep cliffs and produces a huge flower only once in its lifetime. This miracle lasts for one summer, then the entire plant dies. It can take several decades until the flower appears, for this reason it’s called century plant 🌱
Agave is native to Central America, but almost 500 years after its introduction it is now considered naturalized in the Mediterranean area.
By the way: tequila 🍸is made from a species of agave, the agave tequilana!

🐋 Did you know that several species of whales live in the Mediterranean? Even the fin whale, the second largest animal in the world?

The Ligurian sea in particular offers good feeding conditions for whales, and it is part of the “Pelagos sanctuary”. Yesterday we took a whale watching tour from Camogli and were lucky enough to see the following:

🐬 a group of bottlenose dolphins

🐋 4 adult fin whales, quite close to the coast of Chiavari. We observed them while they were doing short dives.
Photos 1 to 4 show the majestic fin whales.

🐳 a group of 5 Cuvier’s beaked whales far offshore the Portofino promontory. The sea there is about 1000 meters deep and they often dive for more than an hour. What a fortune to see them on the surface!

One of the most spectacular coastal hikes of Eastern Liguria leads from Riomaggiore to Portovenere. It’s a long hike, about 14 km, and especially in winter you need to start early to arrive before sunset 🌅
The descend to Portovenere is a bit demanding, but definitely the most scenic part.
A unique trail not only because of the views over the coast, the island Palmaria and the Gulf, but also for the particular rocks and plants, as well as the traces of marble quarrying.

Today was a cold and sunny day, with very clear sky. Perfect for a hike with a sea view 🤩

💨 Ps: cold means temperatures around 10*C, but with the wind chill it seems less. The wind from the North brings very dry air, maximum visibility and flat sea.
