In 2002 after the World Mountain Running Association (WMRA), born on 1984 as International Committee Mountain Running (ICMR), had staged, since 1985, a successful event entitled ‘the World Trophy’, attracting entries from more than 3

0 countries, World Athletics also gave the permission to WMRA for changing title of 'the World Trophy' into 'the World Championships', starting on 2009.
