At the outset of our Oarsome women project, we compiled a survey to examine a cohort of mature women’s attitudes toward physical activity, particularly rowing, and to identify their activity levels, motivations, and barriers to participation. It explored factors that encourage exercise, such as health benefits, enjoyment, and social interaction, as well as barriers like time constraints, cost, and lack of confidence. The survey also aimed to assess interest in rowing to help inform the development of a programme such as “Oarsome Women,” tailored to the target group across several EU countries.
The findings show that although most women are interested in improving their health and well-being, this does not translate into participation in rowing. While many are somewhat active—especially through walking—rowing remains largely unexplored in some countries. Health, enjoyment, and social interaction are key motivators, but lack of time, motivation, and confidence are major barriers. This suggests that participation is limited more by practical and psychological factors than by lack of interest, highlighting the need for a flexible, beginner-friendly, and supportive programme..
