One of the most common mistakes non-native speakers make in English is pronouncing a Long E (EEEy) instead of a Short I (IH). Practice along with me!

Your jaw might be the reason your American accent isn't landing. ๐Ÿ‘‡

One of the biggest differences between American English and other accents is how much the jaw actually drops โ€” especially with that AH sound in words like law, dog, awesome, and father.

It's probably a little more than what feels natural to you right now. And that's completely normal.

Don't be afraid to open just a bit more than your instinct tells you to.

Is it JOOL-REE or JOOL-ER-EE? ๐Ÿ’

Both are accepted โ€” but one is a lot easier to say, and there's a reason why.

Going straight from an L to an R puts a lot of demand on your tongue.

Adding that middle syllable gives it the time it needs to land the R smoothly.

Either way, the stress always stays on that first syllable โ€” JOO-lery.

Save this video if you struggle with this word!

I'm going to say something that might offend some people ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Perfect grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure are useless if nobody can understand you.

People will spend years on grammar and vocabulary without thinking twice.

But pronunciation? "Oh, that doesn't really matter."

Why is pronunciation the ONE thing people treat as optional, when it's the thing that determines whether anyone understands you at all?

I'm not saying it needs to be perfect. But it needs to be accurate enough to be understood.

Otherwise, why learn a language in the first place?

Grammar matters. Vocabulary matters. Pronunciation matters.

Your jaw needs TIME to drop! And if you're rushing, you might not be giving yourself the time required to actually say words properly.

Take the word ๐™จ๐™ฅ๐™ค๐™ฃ๐™ฉ๐™–๐™ฃ๐™š๐™ค๐™ช๐™จ. When you rush through it, you're robbing yourself of that full AH sound and making it sound more like an UH.

Most of the time, speed takes care of itself. It comes naturally with practice. You don't always have to chase it.

But ACCURACY? That's the one that creates bad habits that are really hard to undo later. If you've been ignoring it, it usually doesn't just fix itself.

So slow down, let your jaw actually open, and train the right movement first. The speed will follow!

You know how to say these facial features, but are you pronouncing them correctly?

Here are the main things you should pay attention to:

Eyes โ€”> voiced Z at the end

Nose โ€”> make sure you make a full OH sound, voiced Z at the end

Ears โ€”> listen to how I glide from the EEEy to the R, voiced Z again

Lips โ€”> make sure youโ€™re making an IH and not an EEEy.

Does "hurry" come out sounding like "urry"?

The H is one of the most commonly dropped sounds in English.

Here's what to know: the H in HURRY should be a soft puff of air.

It shouldnโ€™t feel like it requires a lot of muscular effort, so we donโ€™t want dramatic diaphragm movement.

Just gentle airflow!

I do want you to exaggerate on the R, on the other hand, because a lot of learners feel self-conscious about the English R and soften it too much. Let it be strong and full.

Voiced vs. voiceless soundsโ€ฆ It sounds technical, but itโ€™s less complicated than it seems.

Itโ€™s just a question of whether or not your vocal cords are vibrating.

Voiceless sounds pass right through your vocal cords like a whisper (if you isolate them properly when youโ€™re testing for it). Voiced sounds turn your vocal cords on and cause vibrations in your throat.

Once you understand that one distinction, consonant pairs like F/V, S/Z, P/B, T/D, and K/G start to make a lot more sense.

One thing to watch out for as you practice: resist the urge to add a vowel onto the end of a consonant. The moment you say "tuh" instead of T, or "muh" instead of MMM, you've added voicing that wasn't there โ€” and it'll skew how you hear everything else.

Follow for more!

Communication isn't just about what you say; it's about how easily itโ€™s received.

Think of your accent as a road. When your 'TH' sounds are clear, itโ€™s a smooth highway. When you replace it with T, D, Z, or some other sound, youโ€™re adding speed bumps.

Your listener can still get to the destination, but it takes more effort, they have to go slower, and they get tired along the way.

As an accent coach, my goal is to remove the speed bumps so your message arrives at full speed.
