Reiki.
Exploring Japan’s Legendary Energy Sanctuary ✨
Kurama mountain- a power spot for love, light and strength
One of the most special experiences during this trip to Kyoto was visiting a place I had somehow never made it to on any of my previous visits: Mount Kurama.
Located in the northern mountains of Kyoto, Mount Kurama is not usually on the itinerary of most tourists. It is a sacred place steeped in religious history, mythology, and centuries of legend.
One of the main reasons I wanted to visit this site was that, from 8th centuries, it has been regarded as a place where universal energy converges — a site believed to hold particularly powerful energy.
With the growing popularity of wellness and spiritual practices in recent years, many people may be familiar with Reiki. What is less known is that the founder of Reiki, Mikao Usui, is said to have undertaken spiritual training on Mount Kurama, where he later developed what became Reiki healing.
So what exactly is the connection between Mount Kurama and this idea of energy?
While hiking up the mountain, I came across a fascinating cosmic energy monument, accompanied by a sign explaining its history.
The temple on the mountain, Kurama-dera, does not primarily worship traditional Buddhist statues. Instead, it venerates a unique deity known as “Sonten” (尊天), which represents the universal energies of Love, Light, and Strength.
For centuries, people in Japan have believed this mountain possesses extraordinary energy. According to legend, the famous military commander Minamoto no Yosh*tsune, known in childhood as Ushiwakamaru, trained on this mountain. Here, he is said to have encountered the legendary Tengu King, who taught him martial arts and military strategy, helping shape him into one of Japan’s greatest generals.
Setting aside religion and mythology for a moment, I think Love, Light, and Strength are all wonderfully positive forms of energy.
Being able to hike through nature while soaking up a little positive energy along the way felt pretty amazing.
Mount Kurama is filled with beautiful shrines, towering ancient cedar trees, and scenic hiking trails. Much of the mountain remains wonderfully untouched and natural. Rather than treating it as a pilgrimage, we simply approached it as a hiking adventure and enjoyed a leisurely walk through the forest.
When we finally reached the main hall at the summit, there was a star-shaped symbol on the ground marking what is believed to be the mountain’s cosmic energy center. Like everyone else, we joined the queue and stood at the “center of the universe” for a moment to absorb as much energy as possible.
And honestly?
It felt strangely magical.
Just to be clear: this post is about culture, history, and travel experiences—not a religious statement. 😊
