Today, on World Mental Health Day, I want to share something very personal, my ongoing journey with postpartum depression.

I’ve lived in London for 13 years and before becoming a mom I never struggled with isolation. In fact, I thrived on independence, which is one of the reasons I left my home country at 20. But when you start a family, things shift. The independence I had always relied on didn’t work the same way anymore, it backfired, and I found myself feeling very lonely.

Being an immigrant has made things harder. My family is in another country and my partner’s family is in a different city. My friends, though supportive, don’t have children, so they couldn’t fully understand what I was going through. They really did their best and I’m grateful for their efforts but when your friends are scattered across London and an hour away at best, the isolation still hits hard.

The highlight of last week was celebrating little Cesare’s birthday 🎂 Unfortunately the joy was veeeery short lived as we all came down with the flu the very next day ..and we’ve been stuck at home for the past four days! Despite that it was wonderful to be surrounded by so many family and very very few friends.. Italian and African families are TOO BIG. Too too big. The photos don’t quite capture how many people we managed to squeeze into our kitchen and garden ..55 in total! Absolute madness! 🤡

Happy First Birthday to our beautiful son 🫶🏼 This year has been an incredible journey. Your dad and I have had to learn how to be your parents just as much as you’ve been learning what it means to be a human being in this world. It’s amazing to say this but I always imagined you exactly the way you are now. Even before and while you were growing inside me, I would say how much I missed you ..even though I hadn’t met you yet. It was a strange feeling that’s hard to put into words. Every step you take is a step toward your independence, so for now, excuse me while I hold onto you as tightly as I can, knowing that life is beautiful but fleeting. Before we know it, you’ll be a grown man. I hope this coming year brings you so much joy that there’s hardly any time for tears ..and if you do cry, let it be because you want ti***es or because I’m ten minutes late with your favorite lunch: tomato pasta with parmigiano 🍝
