Distance Casting Tournament Wrap-Up Post

While the spring casting tournament was perhaps a soft launch into distance casting, the recent tournament was trial by fire. Everyone who competed was more than up to the task.

There were specific plots playing out throughout the day.

In the senior category, Thomas and Rob went blow for blow the entire day. The difference between their casts was miniscule. Almost 6 hours into the event, Thomas sent out a cast that edged Rob by a few inches and clinched the win. If there were any participants that truly embodied the spirit of competition, it was these two.

John competed in the senior category as well and did remarkably well. John is well over 80. He doesn't make excuses. He just bombs out casts.

Dave and Sabino contested the B class. Both had never done a tournament before but took to it quickly. Dave edged out Sabino by a few feet and took the B class. Well done!

The Junior class went to Rayson at 480 feet with Noah right behind him at 417 feet. And Eli, also in the junior class, took an overall second in the tournament with 529.5 feet. Our kids are something else.

One of the most tumultuous moments of the tournament was when Eli snapped his rod early on in the competition. It was like a gunshot rang through the air, as his CTS rod broke at the tip. The silence in the air when that happened was loud. Some would call it there. He shook it off and got straight back into it. He has a winner's heart.

Randy had one goal. Breaking 500 feet. He chipped away at it all day and right at the end bombed one out at 508.5 feet.

Ben got better and better as the tournament went on and ended with an excellent 451.5 feet.

The spotlight of the day was on Juni. He lead the field early on with a cast of 570 feet. But the goal was breaking 600. Last two casts of the day, 6 hours in, and he put one at 610 feet and the other at 637.8 feet.

What is remarkable about all the casters is that they actually improved as the day went on. Clawing at more distance, they got it done. They may have been physically tired, but their spirit was very much alive. For perspective, by the end of the day, most competitors had walked a distance of 15 miles, but they held strong.

From Juni being the first Alaskan to break 200 yards, from all the participants helping each other out, making new friends and seeing old ones, learning from each other and growing together, it was a very memorable day.

Casting Tournament--Sunday, August 23, starting at 11:00 a.m. at the Kenai Sports Athletic Fields (13199 Kenai Spur Hwy, Kenai, AK 99611).

Entry tickets are available at: https://www.shoreboundak.com/tournament.

The event is expected to run for a total of approximately eight hours. It is a rain or shine event.

For those who competed in the last tournament, know that there are some important differences this time around. Please read the updated rules on the tournament webpage. Below, however, is a summary of the main changes.

This tournament is geared to letting casters get their absolute best distances. I will likely post the names and best casts of the top few casters in Alaska on my web page, using the information available from the last tournament and the upcoming one.

Casters can throw any weight between 4 to 8 ounces. Casters must bring their own sinkers to throw. Sinkers will not be provided.

The minimum permissible line diameter for mono has been lowered.

Winners are decided by a measure of the single best cast performed throughout the day.

The prize pool this time around is still quite good, but as it stands, prizes are not as numerous as the last tournament. Currently, there are unlikely to be prizes for the winners of the B and C class. Prizes will go to the top 3 casters of the tournament and the winners of the Junior, Senior, and Women's class. This may, however, change in the lead-up to the tournament, and I'll do my best in that regard.

If anyone reading this post is interested in donating to the tournament, please reach out to me. Any contributions go towards growing this sport and are greatly appreciated.

Additionally, I'd love if someone volunteered to help out with food. Maybe a family member of a caster that could work a grill in the background? A lot to ask, yes, but keeping my fingers crossed. If nothing materializes, folks should bring their own lunch.

Alright guys, get to practicing! The question on my mind is, will we see the first post-200 yard cast next Sunday? Which Alaskan will have that honor?

USA Surf Casting team President Tommy Farmer recently traveled to Alaska and held a surf casting clinic! Looks like our talent pool is moving westward!

We look forward to seeing the growth these newly educated casters have in the coming months!

The sport of Longcasting is coming to Alaska!

USA Surf Casting President Tommy Farmer will be visiting Alaska this month to put on a casting clinic! This is a great opportunity to learn from one of the best casters in US history!

Tommy Farmer, one of the best distance casters in the world, will be in Kenai on July 19. He will be doing a casting seminar, open to those who have a genuine interest in the sport of distance casting.

I've mentioned Tommy on this page many times before. He's my mentor and is the reason why I got bit by the distance casting bug. During his prime, he held all the casting records in the US.

We're still hammering out the exact details of the where and when, but keep July 19 clear. Unless you're willing to fly down to North Carolina, this will likely be your one and only chance to meet and learn from Tommy. For enthusiasts of this sport, it's a once in a lifetime opportunity at your doorstep.

If you wish to come to the seminar, dm me for your spot. As I said, this event will only be open to those who have a genuine interest in casting and will likely be capped to a certain number of heads.
