For a long time, I was much better at understanding my body intellectually than actually noticing what it was telling me in the moment.
And there's a difference.
You can know a great deal about the nervous system, breath, yoga, stress and regulation โ and still realize you've been living several steps ahead of your own sensations.
That's part of why grounding has become so important in my work.
Not grounding as another technique to perform correctly. And not simply putting your feet on the floor.
The contact is a beginning.
Noticing the room around you. Feeling the floor beneath your feet, the chair supporting your weight, the places where your body is being held by something solid.
And from there, gradually bringing your attention back toward yourself.
What can I feel here? What am I noticing inside? What has been there all along while my attention was everywhere else?

Before asking the body to change, can I meet it where it is?
That question sits underneath so much of what I'm building into the Regulation Ritual.
And perhaps that's what learning the body's language really begins with.
Not understanding every message.

I wrote much more about this on the blog this week. Link in the comments.
