Look at Luna Rossa’s boat and Emirates Team New Zealand’s boat. Look at who’s steering them, trimming them, calling the wind. Look at where they came from. Both of the Louis Vuitton 38th America’s Cup favorites are essentially built from the same source: the 49er and Nacra 17 classes. That’s not a recruiting coincidence. That’s a competitive advantage made visible.

Olympian Odile Lambriex van Aanholt talks to Andy Rice about maximising time on and off water

Time is always the most precious commodity for any racing sailor, whether part-time or professional. For Odile Lambriex van Aanholt going for another Olympics, life should get more simple the second time around.

Having won Olympic gold at Paris 2024 with her experienced crew Annette Duetz, she knows how to run a successful campaign, yet she is more time crunched than ever before – partly because she gave birth to her daughter in mid-2025, and also because Duetz retired from competition after the Games.

The 49er’s first real season of the LA28 cycle is over. It ran from the World Championship in Cagliari last October to San Pedro OCR on the LA 2028 waters in August: seven big regattas, 21 podium places, 16 different teams from 15 nations. Seb Menzies and George Lee Rush (NZL 94) won the two championships and Richard Schultheis and Fabian Rieger (GER 11) won Palma and San Pedro. No team in the fleet stood on more than two podiums.

That is the most open the 49er has been since the class’s first Olympic cycle, and no other fleet on the Olympic programme comes close to it this season. Fifteen nations have a result that tells them a medal in Los Angeles is on. Season two decides how many of them even get there.

The ILCA 7 men sailed their World Championship in Dún Laoghaire from 23 to 30 August, hosted by the Royal St George and National yacht clubs. Hungary’s Jonatán Vadnai won it by a single point from Australia’s Matt Wearn, with Great Britain’s Michael Beckett third on the same score as Wearn. The title was settled on the final leg of the thirteenth and last race.....

Two world championships this year, two titles decided by one point in the last race. The 49erFX in Quiberon and the ILCA 7 in Dun Laoghaire used the same shape of finals format, and both produced the ending it was designed for.

The road to Los Angeles 2028 is already revealing some of the secrets of sailing's next Olympic venue.

The world's leading 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 teams headed to California for the final Sailing Grand Slam of the year, racing on the same waters that will decide the Olympic medals in two years' time.

And one lesson is becoming very clear: go right.

Outside the San Pedro breakwater the right-hand side is so heavily favoured that an extraordinary 90% of the 49er fleet were prepared to take the risk of starting on port tack. But inside the breakwater, where the Olympic medals are expected to be decided, sailors face a very different challenge.

Andy Rice is joined by Meredith Glacken to look at what we've learned from the Olympic venue, as Germany dominate the 49er, Sweden take gold in both the 49erFX and Nacra 17, and some of the biggest names in Olympic sailing struggle to make the podium.

There's also a remarkable comeback from Britain's John Gimson and Anna Burnet, an intriguing new Dutch 49erFX partnership, emergency repairs on the water and one hazard the sailors probably weren't expecting: stingrays.

With two years to go until LA 2028, who has left California with an early advantage?
