Forecast called it: high base, light winds… but a short window before storms built over the back, threatening shade.

So we ditched rigid turnpoints and flew turn-times instead — 65km FAI still in the back of the mind.

We launched as a pack at 1130 and went straight east to the first turn point near the aerials, east of Monte Tomba. Fast with no turning needed along large sections, especially the San Liberale back wall on the way out.

Then the sky started to change.

To the north, towers built fast. The high-level wind did the rest — and the West shut down hard. Cold, dead air everywhere.

That’s where we split up.

We lost Johnna, Sidney and Robert in the shade. Oli pushed a bit further before being forced down. I managed to find the last line into sun and squeezed out a 36km FAI.

Different choices, same sky — and you could see every decision play out in real time.

Tricky blue day. Light SW forecast, stable air, possible ridge turbulence and very little expected in the flats.

We kept expectations realistic and set a short but sweet 35km FAI: WM turnpoint, out to Rubio, then the tricky leg to the church at Casoni.

None of us in goal today — but everyone gave it a proper crack.

Man of the match goes to Oli, landing just short after tagging Casoni.

Rookie of the week, Robert, switched plans off the Lunga and turned it into a personal best: 20km FAI.

To finish the day, a special moment — a long-time friend and great pilot gifted me an oil painting of our dear friend Luigi and best friend Otto.

More tomorrow…

With clouds already forming on the ridge by 0900hrs, we knew one thing — the day would be short. The SkewT agreed.

Plan was simple: a 50km FAI — the usual Milk Run via Tomba, Tortima, out to the airspace and back home to goal at the garden.

We got a little spread out early. I took the back route to Tomba while everyone else went the standard way. Being late off, I was trying not to turn too much and close the gap to leaders Oli and Sidney.

The SkewT hinted at overdevelopment in the bigger terrain — and it called it. A huge Cb built to the north, spread out and shut the sun off to the west.

It looked temporary, so Oli, Johnna and I waited at base in a patch of sun at the back of the valley.

When the sun returned, we crossed… but it wasn’t enough. The sky stayed shaded and by the time I landed below Rubio the ground was wet. No wonder.

Game over.

Thankfully retrieve was on point and brought us back for debrief, a chat, and plans for tomorrow.

Day started windy from the east, but was forecast to drop by 1200hrs. We bided our time and headed to Stella around 1145hrs.

We briefed on a 51km corridor flight, out to the airspace twice and finished at Marostica to head back to the Garden. We worked as a gaggle, bunching up at the first turnpoint, then spreading out towards the clouds in the flats.

Working together myself, we found ourselves in a super low save pit in a blue patch, check the picture.

Myself, Oli and Johnna got in with just Sydney landing short as the day started to get shady. Electing to cut out the other leg we completed a 42km FAI triangle around the flats mainly.

Well done to all and let’s see what tomorrow brings.

A low based day to kick off in Bassano this season, Sunday we attempted a short XC but the day died before getting round. Was a fun hour in the air after 9 months no flying.

Monday looking doable.

Saturday 13th June we release a video showing how we plotted today, live. Already early on our MasteringParagliding Patreon channel, but will be on Patreon.com/BassanoWeatherForecast tomorrow at 0600(UTC) we think we got it bang on.

09/06/2026

Over on Patreon.com/MasteringParagliding we start a 3 part mini series named About Last Week, looking into why the 25th of May was so special and the hacks we used to find the correct cloudbase.
