A few simple movements to restore strength and space in the shoulders.

Lately I’ve been giving a little more attention to my shoulders.

Between teaching, holding a baby, working, and daily life, tension often settles in the upper body. When the shoulders tighten, the neck and breath tend to follow.

These are a few simple movements I return to often — gentle work with an elastic band to restore mobility, strength, and better positioning of the shoulders.

No machine needed. Just a band, a few minutes, and some intention.

I truly believe the body responds to small, consistent inputs. Over time, these small moments of movement help restore balance.

Neck and shoulder discomfort often isn’t just about tightness — it’s also about support.

This is the second part of this sequence I use with clients: rebuilding strength after releasing tension.

These four exercises focus on strengthening the muscles that support the neck, shoulders, and upper spine. When these areas are strong and coordinated, everyday movements feel lighter and pain is often reduced.

These can be done on the reformer or adapted on a mat at home.

Move slowly. Stay pain-free. Strength builds best with control and consistency.

Part one focused on releasing tension. This part is about creating lasting support.

When I tell people that I have changed my body by changing how I breathe they think I’m crazy.

I started to notice that breath was a key element after my son was born and I started my Gyrotonic certification. Every movement was connected to a breath technique and I started to see my body change rapidly.

I started to apply this in my teaching style and started to realize that when the breath, diaphragm and pelvic floor are connected in movement you can start to control how stress is moved in the body.

Not all stress is bad! The body needs to be able to move in and out of stressful states with ease. There are exercises that bring the body into a stressed state and then a recovery state quickly follows.

This can also be done with the breath work When the breath is connected with movement we are able to use different techniques to stress the organs but not necessarily put extra stress on the body.

In my classes I move people through a variety of breathing techniques that train the inside and outside. By connecting the two we are able to get faster change not only with what we see externally but also with pelvic floor health, digestive issues, pain relief, sexual health, chronic stress and anxiety.
