Excellent junior and youth contests at the 13th Golden Girl Box Cup on Day2

One of the longest competition days in the history of the Golden Girl Box Cup was held this Saturday in Boras, Sweden. The second day of the 13th edition of the Golden Girl Box Cup contained 122 bouts and all of the winners advanced to the finals. The youth and the junior boxers made an excellent impact on the competition during Sunday and among the top elite stars, all won their contests.

The finals are scheduled in the next day of boxing in the Golden Girl Box Cup on Sunday when more than 80 contests are in the official schedule. Mr. Ray Husac is the organizer and the real engine of the Golden Girl Box Cup since the beginning of the competition.

The first edition of the Golden Girl Box Cup was held in 2010 and step by step the international female event became bigger and bigger. The Swedish local organizers were not able to host the event in 2021 due to the restrictions but the competition returned to the boxing map with record number of athletes in 2022.

The bout of the day

Sweden’s Isabelle Dahlqvist is their best youth hope who competed in smaller international tournaments in the recent one year. The Swedish bantamweight (54kg) boxer faced Denmark’s southpaw Cecilie Jensen and tried to reduce the fighting distance against her taller opponent. The smaller Swedish had a continuous pressure but Jensen had the technical skills to keep her long in most of the exchanges. Dahlqvist started the third round with three impressive hooks but Jensen regained her rhythm and won their tight semi-final in the bout of the progressed boxers. Jensen’s final opponent will be a top Irish talent, Esther Lambe who eliminated England’s Nancy Shepherd in Boras.

The surprise of the day

England’s EUBC Junior European Boxing Championships silver medallist Megan Bainbridge is only 19 but she has nearly ten years of experiences in the competitions. Bainbridge impressed in the quarter-finals of the elite flyweight (52kg) and she was the favourite against Germany’s Tatjana Obermaier in the last four. Their contest delivered a tight result between them but surprisingly Obermaier became the winner of this semi-final.

The Round-Up

The junior talents impressed in the second competition day at the Golden Girl Box Cup where Ireland’s Alana O’Brien started the campaign with a success against England’s Lilia Hume. Sweden’s Medina Zaman eliminated her English rival, Lexi Phillips at the bantamweight (54kg) and she will now meet another boxer from that strong country, Caitlyn Wise. Croatia’s Lana Paljusic continued her winning path, she eliminated Denmark’s junior No.1, Anne Marie Stagaard in a hectic semi-final.

Ireland’s Georgia McGovern competed in the recent Youth World Boxing Championships and she has strong plans for 2023. The Irish light flyweight (50kg) boxer will be turning to 18 later this year and she uses the Golden Girl as a preparation before the main events. She had a very competitive rival from France in the semi-finals, Maireen Clodomir Desruisseaux who had the same speed in the first round as the Irish girl. McGovern moved more ahead in the second round while the French worked from longer distance but the Irish advanced to the final with her better performance in the third. Her final opponent will be her main national rival, an EUBC medallist, Katie O’Keefe who eliminated Switzerland’s Angela De Felice.

Denmark’s Nadja Munkholm won several international tournaments during her career despite she is only 16 now. The Danish talent joined the youth age group only this January and she worked from longer range in the first round against Italy’s Evelin Scianame. Munkholm proved her extraordinary technical skills and she landed her jabs from safest distance and caught the Italian with heavy shots in the first and second rounds. The taller Danish southpaw was a too difficult rival for Scianame and Munkholm can prepare for the final of the youth featherweight (57kg) where her opponent will be England’s Paige Howarth.
Latvia’s Kitija Zarberga was bronze medallist at the recent EUBC Youth European Boxing Championships in Sofia and she is a great future hope at the welterweight (66kg). The Latvian shocked her rival, Finland’s Viivi Jokinen in the first round and she took the lead on the judges’ scorecards. The Finnish boxer had to go to the medical corner several times due to Zarberga’s powerful shots and the referee confirmed her RSC success. The 17-year-old Latvian will be meeting for the title of the weight class England’s Amy Nolan who had a great success over Norway’s Helene Berg.
Norway’s Francine Lukungu Ahadi earned medals in several international tournaments and she had a fantastic performance in the semi-finals of the elite minimumweight (48kg) today. She overcame her English opponent, Seema Aggarwal in the attacks and her speed was in different level today. The smaller Norwegian counter-attacked successfully the English girl and her hooks found the way to the target dozens of times. Lukungu Ahadi proved her fantastic talent and will be boxing for the title with England’s Ella Harris on Sunday.
Denmark’s Sofie Vinther Rosshaug reached her career highlight at the 2022 Youth World Boxing Championships in La Nucia where she bagged a silver medal. The 18-year-old Danish competes in her first ever elite tournament in Boras but she managed to win her semi-final with superb performance. She controlled all of the three rounds against Finland’s Maria Mehtala and joined the finals as the next from her country. Rosshaug’s final opponent will be another U22 talent, England’s Shelby-Marie Lee at the light flyweight (50kg).
Sweden’s Zhera Milli is a 19-year-old talent who joined the international events as a junior boxer and she is now trying to impress the national coaches to compete in the upcoming major championships. Milli has more than 30 contests and she tried to dictate the tempo against Belgium’s Mayssen Lambot in the semi-final of the elite bantamweight (54kg). The young Swedish boxer eliminated her Belgian rival and she will now meet for the title England’s Eleanor Bouttell.
Netherlands’ Chelsey Heijnen earned a surprise bronze medal at the 2022 Women’s World Boxing Championships in Istanbul and after that success she moved down to the lightweight (60kg). Heijnen is one of the top names at the Golden Girl Box Cup and she began the first round against Germany’s Sarah Hausler with faster attacks. The 24-year-old Dutch was physically stronger than her German rival and she landed shots from all of the possible angles throughout the three rounds. Heijnen enjoyed her warm-up in Boras where she joined the finals of the competition where she will now face Italy’s Valeria Sodano who eliminated Cape Verde’s Carina Mendes.
Following the Finnish successes at the light welterweight (63kg) where Johanna Huttunen and Anette Valtanen both managed to win their bouts, England’s reigning Golden Girl, Jem Campbell showed her current boxing skills at the welterweight (66kg). The taller English was better from all ranges than Norway’s Kristina Mordal and she advanced to the final in Boras three-in-a-row. Campbell can expect a more difficult final against Norway’s best boxer in this weight class, Madeleine Angelsen, a well-experienced international player.
