Get away from the bustle of the city and clamber up into Periya – A village amidst the forest laden Wayanad district in Kerala. Here you find a heady mix of the culture of the land, thrilling martial arts (kalaripayattu) performances, folk music and tribal dance. Then there’s the matter of football being played between Kerala’s very own teams and those coming down from Italy. Live performances by
bands atop a bamboo stage, stay in tree houses and camp the night away beside a gushing rivulet surrounded by nature. These are just some of the fascinating things we do here. Welcome yourself to Roots festival; the wilderness is just about to get more interesting. Get involved kick some o’ that football if you feel you’re a better foot-soldier. Disband the band, take the stage if you think you do a better job at howling it out! For players of a different sport all together, come Saturday evening and you can revel in pomp after you set the festival record at sculling beer; no statutory warnings attached of course. This is where it all starts; at the inaugural Roots festival. (18th to 24th April, 2011)
Look out for more.
