Urgent Need to Train Teachers and Students in First Aid and CPR:Z. ZayapragassarazanDepartment of Medical Education, Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), IndiaTo cite this article: Z. Zayapragassarazan. Urgent need to train teachers and students in first aid and CPR. Education in Medicine Journal. 2016;8(2):89-92. DOI: 10.5959/eimj.v8i2.435To link to this article: http://dx.doi.org/10.5959/eimj.v8i2.435ABSTRACTThis article is my reflection about the recent incident that took place in a sports ground in Pondicherry, India where a 17-year-old school boy collapsed and died in the sports ground after running only 80 meters in the 1500 meters race. The cause of death was an underlying cardiac cause that has manifested during the athletic event. The stress caused by intense, excessive exercise can negatively affect the cardiovascular system. If the boy had received the first line of treatment with the cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the spot, he may have survived. This incident made me to develop some insights on how to prevent such tragedies by throwing light on the need to prepare our students and teachers who are organisers of such events by providing them training and certification in first aid and CPR so that they can effectively participate as rescuers when faced with such emergency situation to save the life of the concerned. This article also stresses the need for policy measures from the government side to include first aid and CPR as a mandatory subject at all levels of education to teach the next generation of life .

Updated: Fri, Aug 30, 2013, 13:24 [IST]

Letter to Indian Red Cross society and heads of all schools, dist health officer, Sir
With regard to above subject, I working in emergency care in rural area seeing many emergencies where people come with various causalities but treated at first aid level inappropriately or completely wrongly, leading to many complications and or disabilities or even death.
Mean while I had an opportunity to be trained in emergency care by Singapore team of doctors, sponsored by govt of Karnata, I felt that even the health care personnel are lacking adequate knowledge in first aid and in resuscitation. So planned for training of the laymen and all health care providers in rural area.
So I approached the local Red Cross society and the president of state Red Cross society who eagerly agreed to support the cause.
Hence I request you to give inputs for giving awareness and also training in first aid .
Thanking you
Yours sincerely

All public places should mandatorily have AEDs
General public should be taught CPR 10

Legendary Pakistani cricketer Hanif Mohammad was brought back to life as reported in TOI. He later died.
In Karachi, he was clinically dead for 6 minutes and was revived after that. Media is calling it a miracle but this is medically a routine and not a miracle.

About 40% of all sudden cardiac events can be revived with simple hands-only CPR10 and the same can be increased to 60%, if external electric shock machines called AEDs or automated external defibrillators are used.
All public places should mandatorily have AEDs and general public should be taught the life saving cardiopulmonary resuscitation technique of CPR 10.
